Zetec ECU

Looking to get my engine running soon, i have a 1.8 silvertop and im planning to run the original injection system on a moddified plenum (supplied with the engine from Ginetta)

Does anyone know of a CHEAP (so not OMEX) ECU and wiring kit for these, i know triggerwheels do one for about £500-£600 but would like some advise before i purchase one

Immobiliser is no problem if you get the matching ECU, keys and transponder...

Benefits: No rolling road, no setup, self learning, plug it in and it just works, cheap, built in OBD diagnostics.

Drawbacks: Not easily tuneable.... (apart from Bluefin etc)

Wouldnt know what to do with the wiring, dont have it anyway, just got the engine and plenum.

You did say cheap !!

you will buy an ecu with key and loom for around £50 less if you drop lucky/

On top of your other ecu you mention you will still need a loom and then it will need mapping.

Megasquirt and a loom is going to cost £250 and then you still need yo map it.

unless you think you can wire and map the above go for the Omex.......

Its the same as every thing in locost land. the more you can do for your self the less it costs.

Unless you can wire and map it ? its not going to be cheap. what you save on an ecu will cost you on the mapping.

Where are you in the country ?

In my vid you can see my manifold started out as a ginneta / Griffin manifold. Ive changed it a bit and added an idle controle valve from a Ka.

Ive also wired Omex and Dta and other ecu's and the Ford one isnt any harder there is just more of it..

Im from mexborough near rotherham/doncaster i was gonna buy a engine from you last year but couldnt get the funds together, i got a decent engine from Ginetta in the end but know absolutly nothing about engines or ECUs and im really in need of some help i have about £500 notes to spend on a ECU so it looks like i may have to get a Megasquirt/Microsquirt and start learning

I'm getting a replacement engine this week, I think that's coming with an ECU and wiring, you can have it for postage if you want

The pic shows the ecu but you dont get it.

Its just a generall pic. I did get the alternator, starter and lots of other bits ect.

I thought I remembered the user name. I think that was two years ago.

You could have a look for a pre owned ecu from a dealer, when some one upgrades. I boughta Dta this way.

Yes and no. Only the ignition to mp so you stand more of a chance using some one eltses.

carbs will still want to go on the rolling road.

Look into Bogg Bro's.

If the engine is post aug 1995 you may find it hard to get through iva on carbs.

2 years.... dear god this car is taking some time... I think i would rather stick with a new ECU rather than mess about with a old one, what is the crack with the Mega squirts, what do you get for the money and what kind of messing about will i have to do

Before I decided to go for the easy option and use the Ford ECU I bought a Megasquirt from ExtraEFI... You get the box, a connector with some labelled wires, and a CD-ROM. I still have it brand new in the box if you really want to go down this route?

However, I'm an electronics engineer by trade and I know very little about engines (carbs scare the hell out of me with all their mechanical black magic!) The amount of knowledge needed to get a MS running seemed a bit too much for me, plus the need to get it on a rolling road etc so I used the Ford ECU. I got the ECU, key, and the wiring loom from the engine bay. All you need to do to get this running is to plug all the connectors in from the loom to the sensors, wire up a fuel pump, wire up the immobiliser transceiver, connect an ignition switch and add a battery. This is probably around 10-15 wires in total. Now turn the key, and it should start. Leave it to idle and it will tune itself. Go for a drive and it will tune itself further. It's simple, it's quick and it's cheap. No need to worry about injector timing pulses, crank sensor polarity, spark advance maps (or any maps at all for that matter)... and you don't need to go and buy an expensive wideband Lambda sensor kit (I have one of these too if you want one!) I know loads of people are using the MegaSquirt and have found it relatively straightforward to get running and I have the upmost respect for them, but I must say that a Ford ECU would be my first choice every time.

Of course I can't tell you what you should do, but if you can wire up a headlight switch, you can wire up a Ford ECU.

If your budget is £500 for the ECU then you could easily have over £400 change out of this option too...

One of the main problems i have is i dont have a engine loom and dont know what year the engine is as its never been in a car and has no stamp or stickers advising the year.

Sounds like you may be able to get a wiring loom fairly cheaply there?! I've got a copy of the Ford TIS DVD which has all the wiring diagrams and technical service info for nearly all their models over the last several years, so I can get a copy of this to you if it'll help?

Post up a pic of the engine, I'm sure someone on here will be able to let you know the age? What's the engine number?

the engine number is stamped just above where the starter is mounted on the edge of the block, you will probably struggle with carbs as the IVA will possibly require a cat fitted. this may not be the case though if the engine is early enough. If your engine can get through IVA on carbs I will possibly have a set of webbers and an ecu Ignition only for sale in the next month which Im currently running on my 1.8 silvertop zetec. if you need any local help Im in Rotherham

could do with a hand to be fair mate, im starting to feel a little out of my depth, the engine hasnt been stamped, like i said its not been in a road car... i was told i could stamp it pre 94 to get it through the emmisions...

Smashing, will do once i have decided what to buy, i have spoken to Phil at Extra EFI and he is actually thinking of producing a plug and play for simpletons like me so i may collaborate with him in regards with the kit but will probably still need some help fitting the damn thing, will come back to you once i have something to fit lol
