LT77 bellhousing differences with pictures

Right then, I am trying to get my head around the differences between LT77/R380 bellhousing and gearbox because I am going to need one very soon.

Please could people who know about these and have dealt with before correct me if I am wrong.

I am building a Viento and I have a Rover V8. I need a gearbox and Bellhousing.

As far as I am aware this is the correct bellhousing for my car

and this

also this

finally this

All these I suspect come from rear wheel drive vehicles such as the SD1 et al.

Now I think that the below is the wrong bellhousing

Also this is wrong

It seems to me that all the 2 wheel drive short bellhousings come paired with the earlier Lt77 gearboxes. Do more modern LT77's fit onto the bell housings with no compatibility issues? Are R380's compatible as well. I have heard that sometimes some of the shafts can be differing lengths?

Can some of you V8 boffins give me some sage like V8 Gearbox advice please?

I belive 1,2 and 3 are all the same ( I think ) and virtually lt77 2 wheel drive bellhousings are the same .

but may be wrong ps I may have one in the shed but cant seem to remember tripping up over it for a while so probably not.

regards

Range rovers may have had LT77's but they had very long bell housings as well.

I believe that DAF vans had shorter bell housings, which may be the one in the picture, and SD1's were half way between (although welcome to be corrected).

LT77's were also dropped into TR7's both 4 pot and V8, although 4 pot has a different pattern.

An alternative would be the box from a landrover 90, the r380 box has a short housing and you can get adaptors to match the V8.

Best to get one from an old SD1 really.

I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to this sort of thing so it might be best to do this.

FWIW, the first pic looks like the LT77 and bellhousing in my Viento. I have the same long gear change lever. (works very well too!)

Coozer,

I don't own any of these gearboxes. I ripped all the images from ebay. I just want to get the right one before I buy.

Are you rebuilding the V8 then?

Thinking about it, but I reckon the zetec will be easier to fit.

If I can get a LT77 like the ones above I have a Suzuki trans to fit. All much smaller than the Landy one I have atm (auto)

What time scale are you looking at for needing the box as may be going to remove the v8 out of mine due to possible change in direction and have the LT77 out a SD with bell housing and the short gear linkage on it.

The serial number has a suffix on it, A,B, C, etc as revisions were made. The later the better though the earlier ones are ok if you don't go crazy with the power. The main problem you'll have is picking one up in good condition as they are getting on a bit now. I've bought three recently at a not inconsiderate cost, two need rebuilding as they whine like a pig, one not used as yet. Both were sold as in good serviceable condition.. a chance you take. I've decided to go the R380 route as they are the strongest evolution of the LT77 used in Morgans etc and I'll be running over 300bhp through it. Same externally, bellhousing and remote will fit.

If anyone wants an LT77 box minus bellhousing and remote for £300, pick up from Kent let me know. Rebuild kits are around £100-£150 and doable yourself.

Hmm, yes I know... a little while ago I put a montego turbo engine in my striker.. bought a whole sherpa van to use the lt77 gearbox for £50.... sold the wheels for 40 and weighed the rest in for 25... good old days eh?

Yep I would buy a Sierra for £50.

I've had a bakers dozen of them. Every flavour bar a cossie. Doubt I will own another
