aftermarket ecu
hi all,
well enough new engine now, so just trying to work out the variable value timing on the inlet side.
what ecu can i use to control this?
or/and can some one point me in the direction how the vct work?

I believe the Emerald can be programmed for variable cam timing, not too too far away from you either.
Pretty good pricewise as well

Anything with an output that can be programmed to switch at a set RPM should be able to do it.

get a used dta one off ebay then you can run traction contorl/launch control/data logging/shift lights etc too.

Before anyone can give you a correct answer we need info on engine type etc as it all depends on what sort of variable valve timing you need, and from
what manufacture?
for example there is at leats 3 different options just from toyota
VVT (either on or off, based on RPM and engine load)
VVTI ,(continously variable valve timing, controlled by PWM waveform, based on RPM, Load, CAS and Cam angle sensors, knock sensor and probably others
too
VVTI-L same as VVTI but with variable lift. Lift is On or Off based on RPM and load too
Most ecu's can control the on off versions (VVT and similar from other manufactures) versions, usually based purely on RPM.
Usually on the more expensive ECU's control the continuously variable stuff and lift, but they are becoming more common these days.

hi all, what is dta ecu?
it is a 1.7 ford puma engine which i am doing for a rwd car.
it has vct on it, i do not really want it, but if i have to run it, i need to know my options. as i which to fit different cams in it.

As above you wont get the same power as the dta. But you will get the drivabilty and save hundreds on an ecu and setup.

Hey, i will be using an OMEX 600 ecu with my 1.7 zetec se VCT engine. i bought this from Shawspeed and will be turning my VCT feature into a V-Tec
style feature so on or off at a set rev limit.

If you used megasquirt then you could use the shift-light output to drive this.
This allows 4 levels triggered at different RPM levels. You would have to do some electronics as these are low level outputs.

Most aftermarket ECU's will not be able to control full variable cam timing as intended - but it can still be used in an on or off mode.
I an fairly sure the Puma VCT is similar to that used in the ST170 engine, and the timing is fully variable and controlled by the ECU using the phase
difference between a cam and crank sensor as feedback.

Hi Stuart, seems like we need to compare notes when I get back re VCT unit. I am planning to use stock ECU to get my Puma running ( no doubt with help
from others on here ) but I have some ITBs waiting and an Omex 600 to operate them. Omex have done some work on the Puma which is why I chose them and
they also seem to be the ECU of choice for the few Puma conversion experts out there. See you in a few weeks.
