Vauxhall 1600 Ecotec - Anybody Fitted One ?
Just wondered if anybody on here has fitted a Vauxhall 1600 Ecotec engine into their 7 ?
If you have i need to pick your brains
Have one coming into the garage for a few jobs and it'll then be going in a 7

Haven't done it myself, but I've seen it getting used to wonderfull effect in the Westfield of Garry Dickson.
This car
Ticks over in the paddock like a bog standard Astra, revs like a bike engine.
Magnificent choice of engine.

I'm currently fitting a 2 ltr ecotec... but remember that mine is not a seven chassis and I'm still at an early stage of construction so
not sure how much help I'll be.
Who the f**K tightened this up!

Ran a 1.6l Ecotec Indy for a couple of years. Rebuilt and megajolt fitted. Happy to pass on anything useful.
Think I have the Haynes manual hereabouts if you need it!

Thanks Lads
ok a few questions
The engine will be attached to a Type 9 Ford Gearbox and will be running on 40 dcoe's (fitted to a Westfield)
1, What sump did you use ? Did you use a shallow one, Baffled ? or Standard ?
2, What Clutch Assembly did you use ? and What Release arm & Bearing ?
3, When fitting a new timing belt kit did you go standard (plastic pulleys) or steel ones ?
ANY Help Much Appreciated including details of suppliers etc
Cheers

I've got a Camskill head gasket, a set of valve stem seals, manifold and oil-pump gaskets if you need them. Pics in my photo archive if
you're interested. I haven't got round to putting them on the For Sale page yet...
Oh - and if you've got a spare couple of hours, you don't necessarily have to replace noisy lifters: it's worth stripping down,
cleaning the lifters if you find the cam a bit tappetty. Messy as hell but v. rewarding when you hear how much quieter it runs.

Mine appeared to have been shallowed with some ally plate, with a shortened pickup but had the std flat Ecotec baffle
2, What Clutch Assembly did you use ? and What Release arm & Bearing ?
Std flat flywheel, so it was a std. Ecotec clutch. A guy on MigWeb makes lightened flywheels to order for any of the VX engines. Think he was
asking about £120 for them. Cheaper than having a go yourself and having to source a new set of 'nads...

I fitted a steel tensioner pulley, as the stock ones appear to have a rep. for shedding. Both the original and replacement guide pulleys were
plastic. I don't recall seeing metal ones.

I know that they're not local to yourself but these guys were brilliant when I was looking for gasket sets, stem seals & rings.
I'd recommend them to anyone:
Lockstitch

I'm fitting a c16 xe to my Striker over the winter and have had a sump made by Bill Falconer up in Scotland
Asked me for a few critical dimensions and I sent him a couple of photos fo the current crossflow set up and he produced this in no time.
Web site here

Lovely guy to talk to on the phone - very helpful and all the time in the world

Thanks for the info so far Lads, Very Helpful
So Just to clarify then, the Standard Ecotec clutch plate will fit the input shaft on the Ford type 9 Gearbox ?
Hadn't heard of Bill Falconer but just had a look on his website and there's some useful info there
Interesting that his clubman engine on the dyno uses standard plastic idler pulleys but a steel tensioner pulley
So that must work ok
Any more info appreciated, especially any more info on the clutch plate and the release bearing
SBD recommend their release bearing which is around £40 iirc

I'd just check the clutch type with SBD. They will doubtless sell a kit, and so should know the components. If I'd have needed one for
the Indy, I wouldn't have wanted to risk it.
Try Chris Astley Motorsport, too. Chris was also a really helpful source of info when I was looking for tuning parts for my Indy (used to use redtops
& Ecotecs for their rally cars, iirc.)

On a C20XE I use a Ford clutch plate, I think off the top of my head it's a sierra diesel one. That's what Yukspeed sent me, I just
assumed the splines were different between the VX and Ford gearboxes, but never actually checked to be fair.
Found the part no, C1175AF from QH. That is for a C20XE though, don't know if it's suitable for a 1600.
