LED indicators and hazard switch telltale light
Hi,
I’ve got LED indicators for the front and back and some small round LEDs from kitspares to use as side repeaters on the front wings. I’ve also swapped
the standard flasher relay for an LED flasher relay. The car is installed with a premier loom and has the sierra’s standard hazard switch on top of
the steering column.
I connected up the two rear indicators just as a test and found that they worked when using the indicator stalk with ignition on, and then also worked
with the hazard switch activated with the ignition off so I'm pleased that this all works ok so far.
However, with the hazards on, the telltale light in the hazard switch wouldn’t flash at all. Thinking this may be because the telltale is just a
normal bulb, I bought an LED bulb and tried this. The telltale then seemed to work but whilst this LED was flashing ok, the actual indicator flash
alternated between a bright flash and then a dim flash (rather than a bright on and then totally off). Removing the LED telltale bulb from the switch
causes the indicators to flash normally again.
Not being too good with electrics, I’m not sure what could be causing this. I’ve read about using diodes but didn’t think I needed one if using an LED
relay? Do I maybe need to install a diode somewhere in the hazard switch circuit to make the telltale light work?
Thanks in advance,
Lee

had the same problem, used a led inside the hazard switch drilled a tiny hole in the side of the switch for the led wires to exit and connected it to
one of the terminals that switched the indicator, used a dioded so it didn`t come one with the indicators
