Engine + gearbox combinations
Hi all, I'm in need of help from the collective knowlege of LCB
I want to use a Zetec SE engine in a new car I am planning from scratch.
The engine will be mid mounted behind the driver and I need a gearbox that is fairly short or has the drive output close to the engine to keep things
compact. So far I have found the Audi A4/Passat boxes but can anyone suggest another option or where I could get bellhousings or adaptors to
suit........
Thanks in advance.

In which orientation are you mid-mounting? I get the feeling you mean longitudonal rather than transverse?
If transverse, does the standard IB5 gearbox not work for you?
If longitudonal, then you are pretty limited in terms of off-the-shelf bellhousings... Ford Type 9 is the only one I am aware of.

I've got a Renault 21 turbo engine and UN1 in my mid engine gearbox. You need a transaxle from your description.
Kindest Regards,
Richard.

Audi has to be the weapon of choice these days, light and very strong + 6 speed options. You can get LSD's as well but expensive. Have a look at
GT40 forums. Ebay sells them new for not a lot relatively.
UN1's are well known and not just in old renualt 21/25, look for espaces etc.
Other option could be alfa boxes that sat in the rear axle with dedion suspension although a bit thin on the ground now.

At £1600 for the adapter package, you may as well go for the 20v turbo VAG engine attached to a passat gearbox!

A common mistake to grab the first one out of any car. The 21 turbo box - UN1/013 is the stronger, as is the V6 model.

Richard.

I honestly don't think you'll find any other bellhousing or adapter to fit the SE, off-the-shelf. I think you'll be DIYing this one,
I'm afraid.
