Live Atlas - LSD

I've been searching through haystacks for weeks now, and have finally found an TF LSD from a Capri.

The total cost including fitting is less than the cost of JUST a TranX/Quaife LSD (£850) but it is still a fairly significant amount of money.

When looking for one I had pretty much made my mind up that I wanted one... now that the opportunity has presented itself I'm teetering a bit due to the numbers involved.

Will it really really be worth the money?

A bit idle to go googling but..
Is there a kind of clutch involved in a LSD?
If so ..
Do you have to adjust or slacken a clutch or anything?
Coming from a heavy car to a light weight seven?

cheers

If it helps I fitted a Torsen slippy diff to the other car (hairdressers c. 980kg and knocking out c.200).
Worth it for the grin factor alone.
In the dry fire it out of a tight corner, it locks up and goes like a rocket.
Can be a bit tricky in the wet if it locks un-expectedly but you do tend to anticipate that after a few brown trouser episodes.
Providing it's mechanically OK I'd say go for it.
Cheers, Pewe10

I have an open-diff but on hard-cornering the inside wheel spins up. I also can't do donuts

The LSD works in the same way regardless of the car; there is some setup involved when fitting into the axle but this is all taken care of by the installer at the time.

Does not being able to do donuts warrant spending £850?

you can do donuts no problem without an LSD, drifting however.... that's a different story!
I think drifting is worth the money

Really, how? It just spins the inside wheel - I noticed the same on the last trackday. There is no real control in the slide...

Would it be better to adjust the suspension so the front outside wasn't dropping so much as to cock the rear wheel?

Dunno? Not too up on suspension adjustments tbh. I adjusted them when at Elvington to reduce under-steer - which worked but at Blyton last week I was struggling to keep up with the 'diff'd cars' coming out of corners as I simply couldn't get the power down.

No, when you're moving you wont get a donut, but if you do it from standstill it should quite happily spin round in circles!

It works the same way, but if it's a plate type diff then the preload and ramp angles may not be suitable for a much lighter car e.g. what may be a fairly tight diff on a heavy car could be like a solid axle on a lightweight one. OTOH if it's already well worn and quite loose, then it won't have much LSD action at all. Well worth getting this right before the diff is installed.

Not to tread on toes here, but Ben - Dave is looking for some excitement within his car…

He currently has an open diff, and having been passenger with him on the wettest track day I have ever encountered, where he was ultra committed, and smooth and quick - I can imagine it being quite a boring drive, and not very 'thrilling', even mores in the dry.

As we're all like minded petrol heads, we strive for that adrenaline rush and speed - there is no point (imo of course) Dave spending more money for more power, when he cannot use the power he currently has, as above - all that happens is that his inside wheel lights up - it requires no input from the driver, you just keep your foot planted, no fun whatsoever (again, only imo)

Once he has an LSD fitted, he'll then have much more of an issue keeping it on the black stuff, as he won't be able to go 'all balls out and if I break traction then it doesn't matter because only my inside wheel will spin which requires no driver input or activity'

Getting an LSD will transform the car completely imo, once you can use the power you have, THEN you add more… but until then, more power will just make your inside wheel even more bald, and quicker, and still remain no quicker around the track...

Was just trying to save him a bit of money. Sheesh. If his front suspension was stiffened a bit it might not spin the rear so much. Although in the wet it probably won't help

The Capri LSD's are very rare, i would be inclined to make sure you can get bits for it.

We have a ZF in the Escort - it's the dogs back wheels, but was very expensive.

Is an ATB not an option? The 3J range is supposed to be decent too and made by the Trans-X crew before they were bought out by Quaife.

I know the Capri LSD is as rare as a virgin in Essex - the chap that has it is a gearbox installer/re-conditioner so the 'consumables' needed to maintain/install it are available, that's not a problem.

The 3j/quaife stuff costs around £850 for the diff alone + fitting so comes in at well over a grand (which is crazy when the car only cost me twice that!)

Try this for Gripper - Also have a very good name now and widely used in rallying.

The Capri unit sounds like a go'er. I would. You won't regret it.

The Capri lsd in the atlas axle is a ZF diff, and works very well. That what's in my car. Parts are available from Fostek or Burton Power
