Bosch 044 pre filter to avoid cavitation
Hi
Any recommendations on a prefilter for an 044 pump. Most web searches suggest 100 micron but sytec only go up to 55 micron.
Running c300hp and have a 10/20 micron sytec motorsport filter between the pump and the injectors.
Ideally want 10mm barb fittings rather an lots of AN adaptors as this is low pressure side.

I ran one of these in front of the pump (screwed directly in) on my Camaro. That was a 380lph pump (600hp), no issues with cavitation.

You can get AN8 to M18x1.5 adapters to fit them straight on to the pump if you have space.

You do not need a pre-filter on an genuine 044, only use a filter after the pump.

I did hear that the 044 pump has gauze in it but it cannot be cleaned.
So this is a bit belt and braces.

Smaller numbers mean better filtration. 55 micron will filter better than 100 micron. So I'd just use that if it will still flow enough

Yes but bigger number better flow which is what I am looking for. Just want to protect the pump from big stuff. Have a 10/20 micron filter between
the pump and the injectors. Over 80 was recommended for pre pump preferably 100.
Over the years travelling around Europe I have had to clean my pre filter on numerous occasions. Most production cars have bag filters for this
reason.

100 micron is correct for pre filter. Any smaller can lead to restriction, also large pleated washable filters flow much better than sintered metal
etc. Those Epman ones are cheap RIP offs of expensive ones but they work.
AEM and Bosch recommend that their pumps are fitted with a 100 micron pre filter in performance applications.
15 or 20 micron is fine for high pressure filter.

Most OEM installs have a very coarse screen before the pump, and are expected to last 200k miles. I'd have zero problem just running a high
pressure filter. If your pump fails in 1/4 of the time it would in an OEM installation, you prob won't own the car then anyway!

No, but one with not enough glow can cause it, which is why Jim is looking for one with the best flow AIUI.

I had a pre pump filter that was too restrictive causing cavitation so I have replaced it with one that seems to have reduced / eliminated the
cavitation. The fine filter is now post pump only.

I used lpg vapour filters behind the 044 in one of my cars , worked a treat and have barbs to suit hose so worked mint with the 14mm hose fitting on
the 044 I had . Cost a couple of quid so changed it every year and it caught a few bits when I cut it open to see how it coped with liquid rather than
vapour

All sorted. Cavitation gone but fluffy midrange that was getting worse and worse.
Been to the Rolling Road today to discover problem was a dying MAF sensor. Full power now restored.

if you got bits in your system enough to worry about the gauze in a 044 then a pre filter is not your problem you need to clean your system
you shouldn't run pre filters before your pump and you only find pickup strainers on in tank pumps
