someone make my mind up please

Ok been thinking of changing my engine
What do I go for ?
fitted now is a 1.3 x flow fitted to a book built locost, do i go for the easy way out & fit a 1.6 x flow, un-bolt & re-fit job or go for a zetec 1.8 or 2.0 ?
Thinking of cost as well as the wife keeps saying "what do you need some more seats for ? & its got a engine what do you want another for " yes love
Lets say my technical knowledge is more cross flow than zetec
I think what I am trying to say is do you have to be a clue up wiz or a young but rusty spanner monkey to go for the zetec option

keep the 1300 and do a number on it over the winter. don'tknow state of tune at present but you can probably get a bit more out of it if you try :-)

If you are comfortable with this technology stick with it !

Have you thought about the CVH?? lighter than a pinto.....simple etc etc....Oli.

Go for a mildly reworked 1600/1700 x-flow easy to work on, mate to everything. Parts not expensive. Lots of fun in car like this.

On the other hand zetec - lots of power for little money - only probs are what you feed it with on induction side - webers/tb's or bike stuff. Not difficult. Same side exhaust etc - you could cut and shut a xflow manifold if the primary bore is big enough + not much'll go wrong with the zetec in about 200 years.

its a 1.3 gt re-built new pistons ects
not sure if its been rebuilt with performance parts ie cams ect

Just to confuse the matter i'll mention the good old XE as the main alternative to the zetec option

If you want to keep it simple and are not too worried about fuel economy then it sounds like whatever engine choice you decide on the carb route will be your best bet still.

Clearly the best choice of engine mentioned on this page so far

However, it won't mate up to his existsing gearbox, so you'd need to factor in and extra ~£170 for a bellhousing straight away.

My choice in that situation would be a Zetec. Perhaps bolt a pair of secondhand 40's just to get it going whilst putting together a locost fuel injection system to bolt on later.

Crossflows are nice in a retro kind of way, but they have to be in a fairly high state of tune to deliver what a stock Zetec would in terms of power.

If you have the 4-speed 'box then you're pretty limited in how much power you can put through it, and if it's a book chassis, the type-9 won't fit.

So realisticly unless you fancy chopping and changing the chassis, the 1.6 crossflow would probably be easiest and cheapest by a fair way.

What gearbox are you using and how much room is there around it ?

you don't say what you want to achieve by changing the engine, presumably more power but how much? And how much you are willing to spend money and time wise. Bear in mind increase in insurance and possibly road tax.

Easiest would be to overhaul and bore out existing engine, if that is possible, and put some tuning goodies.

... but it may be cheaper to slap in a 1600 engine in. And then if cash/time allows. put tuning goodies on.

After that, take you pick of engines - rover v8 will give the biggest bang per buck.

Depends on your budget, decide that first.

If you're doing it right a Zetec will cost >£1000.

2.0L Pinto will cost about £100.

I'd have to say keep the X-flow, the noise it makes is worth it alone.

Plus loads about and dead easy to work on, nice and small aswell.

As andy says decide your budget. The zetecs are cheap engine but carbs and manifolds and ign arnt cheap. If youv got a 4 speed box u will need to change for a type 9 so different prop. Well worth spending the money on.

Pinto or bigger crossflow is the cheapest option. Id still go for a type 9 if u havent got one.

Zetec needn't be that expensive IF you can fit it in using the standard induction system and are prepared to use the standard ECU. Ok its not optimal in terms of performance but saves plenty of £s.

My Velocity has a 1.8 from a Mondeo fitted, they have the black plastic induction system that is on the side of the engine. Had to move one engine bay brace by about an inch to get it in. Sorting out the ECU wiring wasn't to bad, thanks to the resources on this forum.

Used a Fiesta alternator, but cut down & retained existing bracket. Changed the water pump & got a new belt to make everything turn in right direction. Put a new cam belt on to be on the safe side.

The air filter housing etc was junked and a new one made up from drain pipe. Water rails were made from some stainless & copper tubing.

Paid £250 for the engine, alternator & starter, got the ECU for free at a local scrappy, so not expensive.

I've not put many miles on it yet, but sailed through emissions at SVA.

Go the zetec route.

If you're on a budget, do it as cheap as possible then upgrade parts as and when you have the cash.

If your Escort box is a Mk1 it won't stand up to sporting use with a 1600 Xflo for long but the Mk2 box was stronger.

However you should be able to fit a Cortina or Capri 1600 4 speed gearbox without major alterations to the Chassis -- this will take a bigger engine without problem. But the propshaft will need altered.

As mention the CVH in 1600 Xr3/Orion Weber carb form is another option a lot more power than the 1300 and simple to wire up. However the engine mounts need a bit of thought, but the CVH is a halfway house to fitting a Zetec at a later date as the mountings required are very similar.

as for the box its a stright cut quaife so it should be up to the power think i will go for the easy way 1.6 crossflow.
just getting hold of a good one!

You don't need to get hold of a good one.

I bought a GT head on ebay for £20, he threw in the seized block with it.

Set of new bearings, set of 2nd hand pistons, new rings, gasket set, rebore and crank regrind and it runs great.
My first full engine rebuild and I was amazed at how simple it all was.

Sounds like a spitfire too

Can I ask why? I thought I'd heard of this being done - certainly was going to be my next step with an engine upgrade.

Other thing to bear in mind is a lot of these newer engine types are taller so think about your bonnet line.

Plus no-one's even mentioned a bike engine yet...

I was about to ask the same, I'm sure dozens of people have used type-9's in a book chassis. Perhaps he's thinking of the MT75?
