Megasquirt kit

Just opened my Megasquirt kit from Glen's Garage...wow...every type of component supplied in its own bag, and all neatly labelled.

Should be a doddle to put together on the cold winter nights in the new year...

Ive spent the last couple of days putting together a parts list for the megasquirt V2.2 and stimulator using Farnells and Maplins as suppliers.
I am buying the pcb and processor from Bill shurvinton and the total so far is in the region of £110 for the megasquirt and stim parts and pcb.
I looked at the Glens garage kits and nearly ordered one but was put off by the chance of the customs getting a rake off and dont like ordering from abroad if I can avoid it.
Im going to build the Simulator over the next couple of days whilst waiting for the other parts to arrive.
Paul.

someone is doing a megasquirt on ebay for 150 buy it now.

i keep thinking about it but i haven't a clue what i'm doing.

Basically i want megasquirt'n'spark and want to be able to upgrade to the new processor when it happens so i can play with new features.

http://www.glensgarage.com/

Customs rake off was about £30

That was on the MS I v3 Kit with Stim.

Was going to get the whole lot off Bill but he was on holiday at the time.

Both Glen and Bill seem to be Top Blokes to deal with. Bill has the advantage that he's only 10minutes away, though!

Mine came from Glen, cost £110 with taxes etc. Top kit everything clearly and bagged up, took about 4 hours to solder up.

Only hiccup, 6 week delivery at the time, this may be much shorter now.

Regards Mark

Mine took about a month in the end....ordered in Nov and turned up a week or 2 before xmas...

Stephen

PS Glen, like Bill, does this in his spare time. I think he makes up batches and sends them out (or at least he used to). Don't fret - it will turn up...

thought v3 was the SMT version where as the new processor wasa daughter board for the existing system.

possibly showing my ignorance again

Bought the V3 as I understood it was easier to mod for fuel and spark control

this is my big problem with megasquirt ...... i can't find a simple, idiots guide version that says "you are a numpty, you want this, it is future proof" once you've got it, you need to do this, then that, then the other.

i've twice almost bought a complete system from Bill - always stopped just before i handed over the cash as i found a better use for the money.

That's my plan....numpty guide written by a numpty as I go...

I bought the V3 board as I understand it's easier to extend than the V2; and no - it's not Surface Mount (didn't know what SMT was earlier)

MS II board can indeed be plugged into both V2.2 and V3 boards.

I decided on the V2.2 board as it supports the megasquirt and spark extra firmware which allows the use of Edis or conventional ignition using an ignition module, plus gives the potential for shift lights , rev limiting traction control etc.
The V3 board is a 4 layer board and uses more components but includes a built in ignition driver interface and the components are supposedly all of a higher temperature rating, which nearly made me decide to buy that version. However i decided that i was going to run Edis ignition and didnt really need any of the extra features some of which are not yet fully supported by the existing firmware.
I went on the forums and printed out as much info as i could find ie megamanual , upgrade info etc I then managed to find time at work etc to read it and understand most of it.
Paul.

............................hence the reason why I bought the s/h MBE system!

Transferred the maps to the ecu for the seven over christmas in the kitchen on the table, test ran it in the grasser yesterday and it's just grand! (forgot to reset the rev limit though which scared me a tad.......at least I know the XE engine will stand 8500 revs for one blip!)

Both v2.2 and v3 board support the MegasquirtnSpark Extra software....

Nearly finished my V3 board. Am intending to run the MSnS-E with a second ignition driver circuit installed. This means no EDIS module required.....

Also going to install shift light- and tacho- drivers.

MSII Does not support MSnS-E.

Both V2.2 and V3 do.

The V3 also contains a VR sensor input on board and direct ignition drivers, makes life easier.

The Micro-Squirt is the SMD option, it's tiny. Only available ready built for around $235 and needs off board drivers.

The Ultra MegaSquirt was intended to be SMD partial but the project has been abandoned due to rapid advances in processors leaving it behind.

I've just restarted my project after a long layoff. (Story elsewhere)

Because I have V2.2 I have to make up a dual VR input board to suit my Toyota dizzy, using this and the dual trigger software I should be able to change ECU with no mods.
I bought a cheap Toyota ECU off Ebay and gutted it for the special sockets, which I then used to make a conversion lead to plug in.
I wanted to be able to swap back to factory ECU at any time.

Finished the input board last night after a second attempt. The info on the dual trigger input circuits omits the second opto-isolator but mentions it needs one much higher up in text. Doh, made board without one, then remade another board to include it.

I'm hoping to write it up on my website plus a straightforward guide to each flavour of system. It's a bit difficult as everyone can mod it differently.

The VEMs group started out when another techie decided he could do better than B&G.

Probably like every other lookalike 7 manufacturer.

Ditto - I'm intending to do similar for my zetec install. Will probably post a brief version here first though.

hey Paul;

what was the cost in the end?

I'm looking at getting the board and microC from Bill, the rest like yourself from Maplin/RS. (not sure if that would be cheaper).

If you ahve a full parts list, maybe with maplin part no. then could you u2u it to me?

thanks

It cost me £115 for the megasquirt v2.2 and the stimulator, I built the stim in a box with pots on the front and a flying lead so somewhat better than the basic unit. The board and processor cost me £50 from Bill Shurvinton and it would be considerably cheaper if it was possible to buy the board alone, the processor is only about £5 and easy to flash with a home built programmer.
I will try and sort a parts list I ended buying from Rs farnell and Maplins so need to go through the paper work to find the part numbers. give me a few days and i will sort it out.
