Fuel system
Hi there all.
Could anyone give me some advice on the fueling system for my car.
I'm building a Zetec up with some GSXR 750s using the orginal injections and a plan to use Megasquirt.
Would the pump and pre pump filter from a VX red top car ie Cav, Astra, or Calibra be a good choice? I've been told they're all inline.
Also it seems some people run filters before and after their pumps. Is this necessary?

I wasn't planning to use a swirl pot though just to go straight for high pressure lines.
Do you run a pre and post pump filter?
Looking at some peoples pictures I've seen just a post pump filter...

I'd really apreciate some peoples views on this. I have a day off work tomorrow to sort out the fuelling and I don't want to spend it
twiddling my thumbs.

You deffo need a filter before the fuel pump, ive known someone knacker two pumps !
Some people do and dont mount a High Pressure filter after ther pump. Personnaly im not bothering.
You will need a swirl pot, especially if your going to do track/race/sprint days, if any air gets into the high pressure side, then your fuel pressure
drops, and its splutter, splutter time.
Good website... MegaSquirt, fueling, wiring etc etc

Unless you have a sump built into your tank and some pretty reasonable baffling then you will need to run a swirl pot of some sort if you are fitting
fuel injection.
If you don't you will find that you get fuel starvation once the tank gets down to between 1/2 and 1/3 full on corners.
pre pump filters are allways a good idea.
Generally you would run from the tank into LP pump (which generally has an integral strainer). Out of the LP pump into LP filter then into the swirl
pot. The swirl pot would generally have a filter on the outlet either integral or external which then feeds the HP pump, from the HP pump into a HP
filter and then up to the injector rail, through the pressure reg and back to the swirl pot. The top connection on the swirl pot should be connected
back to the main tank. This last connection is to stop hot returned fuel from vapourising in the top of the swirl pot when fuel demand is low.

I would use a fine mesh strainer before the high-pressure pump because they run fairly fine tolerances inside - a small bit of swarf or grit will
seize an EFI pump solid in no time. I would also recommend an EFI filter after the high-pressure pump so that you don't clog your injectors,
because they run even finer tolerances than the pump!
EFI pumps don't suck very well, so they need to be mounted at or below the bottom of the fuel tank. Because they don't suck too well the
strainer shouldn't be too restrictive in case it causes cavitation. My strainer is a disposable nylon item intended for diesel vehicles - the
disposable paper type are too restrictive.
Some injected Fords and some (all?) injected Cavs have suitable pumps. the Ford one I'm running has a 15mm inlet which made finding a suitable
bit of hose difficult, while my spare is a Cav pump which has a more suitable sized inlet.

Halfrauds shelves until I found one that fitted the available space - they're much the same in terms of flow and function, just different
fittings.

Just thought of another possible option.
If you are totally against a swirl pot you could try filling your tank with fuel foam.
You could then theoretically do away with the LP pump and the swirl pot. You would still need a pre and post Filter for the HP pump for the reasons
stated by Eddy.
The system I outlined to you in my first reply is the way most race cars are set up.

Thanks all for your replies. Been stressing and putting off this part of my build for ages!
The tank I have does have a sump so I think I will try it without a swirl pot initally. Its destined for road use primarily anway. But if I do
encounter problems I've got the details - thanks.
Its mainly the pre pump filter that I'm concerned about now - I guess I'll just go to the motor factors with an outline of what I need
they're pretty good. I'm going to use the VX pump and and injection filter from the link above - the type depending on the input/output
sizes required.
I have been advised that I need 10mm copper down the tunnel but this seems big to me...

8mm down the tunnel is fine.
10mm is overkill.
Gererally 12mm feed to HP pump and 8mm out is about right.
As has been said they aint good suckers! But they dont arf blow!

I can confirm tank is 12mm output so I guess I'm loking for a 12mm/12mm filter and a 12mm/8mm pump and a 8mm/8mm filter. The last filter is easy
but I've been told the 12mm/12mm is hard to find. If I get hold of one I'll post here
What connectors does the pump you have for sale have?

Big bore filters are available but tend to be expensve. People tend to rely on strainer/filters in the tank/swirlpot.
The bigger filters have screw in connections that you can screw any size tails into to suit your fuel hose.
