A Good Weekends Work!
Well Thats just been a very productive weekend.
Megasquirt arrived, and has been built including the Stimulator. It tests OK so far.
Now all I have to do is the Mods for MS Extra Firmware, and direct drivers for Wasted Spark Ignition for the V8. This seems a better way forward than
trying to obtain an EDIS8 unit.
Also a Second set of Throttle Bodies procurred from Ebay.
So I now have all 8 Throttle Bodies, and just need to do the Manifold when I have finished the mods to the Megasquirt.
It took me about 1.5 days to build both boards. Next one wont take so long. Its reading the manual, as there are decisions to be made during the
build. In hind sight Read the Manual first, decide on what options, Mark / delete out the options you dint want with a Marker pen, and go from
there.
I hate reading constructional manuals and this one is 44 pages of how to solder components on a PCB. Oh Well its built now
The next one I build wont take me so long.
Instructions were simple to follow, but not so simple to understand.
Its a pity they didnt show the circuits in the optional sections, I have to trace it through to understand what they were saying.
Definately a case of knowlege not being an advantage this time round!
But I got there in the end.
I did like the way they constructed the power supply section then made you test it. This must be a good thing for those who have lesser Electronics
experience.
At least you know each section is working before you move on to the next. It HAS to be easier to fault this way for the inexperienced amongst us.
Even I had to back track as one bit didnt work.
I had left out a resistor. TICK them off on the manual as you install them. I did, and I still missed one
As usual I spent more time sorting a serial cable out. in the end I made a new one. It would have been quicker to do that in the first place
I am well pleased so far. Cant wait to get it all running

could you keep putting up updates with the megasquirt fitment and setup as I was thinking going the same way myself and still reading and getting lost
on their sites so any help would be gratefully accepted.

Playing with the vems 3.2 ( very similar to the Megasquirt ). going wasted spark.
Got a set ( 4 double coil unit s) there is also a ( 2x 4 coil unit ) they come up on ebay now and again all from thor rangies i belive.
the main advantage is a ecu controlled spark curve as apposed to the very accurate bo weight and vacume method
( sarcastic me )

Who did you buy your kit from Geoff? Was it one where all the components were included?
Cheers

Looks good Geoff.
I've just ordered an MS-II kit from DIYautotune.com - it should be complete with everything. I placed the order online on sunday evening and it
was posted by 11am (US time) monday. I think they quoted 3-5 days for shipping so it should be here by the start of next week. Hoping customs
won't pick it up and charge me duty+VAT but be aware that you may have to pay it if you order from the states.
I'm going to use the EDIS from my Megajolt to start with and ditch it when MS2/Extra is ready.

I used Glens Garage, and I got clobbered for Import Duty and VAT. Its anything over £18 gets Vat & Duty
I also got the Stim board, (40 mins to assemble. - piece of p*ss to assemble)
Bought the Full kit, with extra Drivers for V8 Wasted Spark.
With all the bits, Postage, VAT & Duty, it worked out only very slightly cheaper than buying from Bill Shurvington in the UK.
Still Its nice to get parcels from overseas...
Paid by Paypal and was dead easy. took about 10 days to get here... took the cheapest postage rate they did!
Download the construction manual, and READ it, then READ it again, then READ it whilst assembling the units.
Read it in small chunks as its Boring!
ie get familiar with it.
Its not difficult, IMHO it has too much detail of where every component is. (I put the website component plan up on the PC screen whilst building for
quick reference)
But then I have built several Radio transmitters, Data devices, TV transmitters and recievers, and other bits and pieces.. Building kits is not hard
work... Just time consuming for me.
I have printed all the manuals I need and thats about 3" of paper. As I am using MS1 with a V3 board and hopefully MS Extra firmware for the V8
wasted sparks.
Cant use the newer V2 processor for that firmware. Should be OK, as the V8 only revs to 6K Rpm max.
EDIT:
The kits come with all the components sorted in bags and labelled with their values, and which ones they are.
ie bag with 6x 1K resistors, R1, R3, R17, etc etc (not the real values on the kit, just an example)
Make it easy to assemble if you are not used to this sort of thing.
Watch out there are some resistors of the same value in two bags... but the Wattage is different. nearly caught me out. But then I read component
values like comics!
Thus it pays to read the manual as you go, Check the components and tick them off in the manual as you fit them.

Good work Geoff... looks good.
Out of interest what TBs are you using?
Can't wait to get my megasquirt done. Haven't done any soldering etc. in ages but as my Dad's a chartered electronics engineer I
will hopefully get all the help I need.
Cheers,
James

James,
Honda CBR 600 throttle bodies 38mm bore.
Two sets needed for the Rover V8.
Altiss Engineering make a manifold for these TB's for £600. However, if they make the manifold, those bodies must be suitable.
I will be making the manifold. However, I fully expect that I will have to trade some electronics experience and skills for some Ally welding skills
