Getting a Trade Account
After seeing an earlier post about Halfords Trade Cars ( which I didn't get because my local Halfords guy wanted a copy of my City and Guilds
certificate to prove I was a qualified mechanic, big problems for me is that I am an accountant). I was wondering what I had to do to get a trade
account.
I am thinking about setting up a limited company with the words "Car Sales" in the name. I don't intend trading, just want the name
and proof that I own the company. I should be able to get a trade account with this. Does anyone see any problems with this idea.
Cheers

Surely there is a cost in setting up a limited company?
Is there another Halfords branch near you? If not just try it again when that employee isnt working. It seems down to their discretion and some of
them dont seem bothered at all. Ive used my Nissan payslip for one (when I was in the design office!) and my NUS card for another (Automotive
engineeing degree) 2 different stores, both didnt seem bothered that I might not be using their products for trade.

you don't need to be a limited company - if you want to go down that route, why not set yourself up as a sole trader - ie, Mr Bloggs trading as
" X Garage Services"

i have a halfords trade card and know a number of people with them but if you dont spend a lot with it there now started canceling them.think you need
to spend around £1000 a year to keep it as they are changeing the rules on the trade cards now.
if your near cumbernauld you can use my trade card any time as evryone i know uses it all the time with no problems as you no longer need to singn at
halfords yourself for goods.

I got one becuase the trade section manger just asked me if I wanted one when I was looking for some tools.
My mate up in scotland was told he just needed a letter head, so he made one up on his PC and printed it. They took a look at it and gave him a card.

I can set up a limited company for £30 and I can do a tax return in about 30mins, so the cost and hassle doesn't bother me.
The reason i am so keen is I managed to get a price for a pair of new sierra calipers and it was £30+VAT for the pair. bargin I thought. I am told
that the trade discount in the likes of partco and dingbro is anything from 45% to 65%.
I just wanted to know if I had to trade and what sort of checks thy would do, if any.

I think when the launched the card some stores may have had a quota of trade accounts to open as they were trying to get business away from the trade
counters. As the accounts have been around a while now, it may be harder to get them, as they probably want some better proof before they give you a
big discount.
Havent heard the rumour about the accounts being closed, Ive had mine about 2 years now and use it fairly regulary but havent spent anywhere near
£1000, maybe £200 a year. Also my housemate works there at weekends at he hasnt heard anything about it either.

easy
a few business cards with a made up name in them saying you are trade, car sales is a good one. and a letter head, maybe a bill made out to you from a
garage, for anything, with the trade name on it(easy one, a bill for a bulb from a garage made out to your company name)
that should be ample for being a trader, i normally get discount etc for just a business card.....
dont need a limited company, not worth the hassel...
