A question for the brain box's
I'll be fitting a 1300 Xflow in my little 100e and i need a gear box.
In order to ger wide wheels on the back i have a Anglia 105e rear Axle with a 4:1 diff ratio. I have been told that it will revv it's nuts off
on the motorway and i need a diff ratio of 3:8 or something like that for decent crusing.
If i fit a 4 speed box i'll have to change the diff ratio.
If i pop in a type 9 5 speed i'm thinking it would be ok as the 5th gear would make up on the motorway keeping the revs lower and it would still
be quick of the mark.
Could someone work out which would be better on the motorway, eithre change diff, pop in 5 speed box or do both!

I'd put a type 9 in and give it a try - you can always change the diff later.
4.1 Should give reasonable acceleration - bearing in mind you are using a 1.3 you don't want to do anything to make the accelaration worse eg by
fitting a 3.8 diff

I used a type 9 on a tuned crossflow with a 4.1 diff and used it mainly for touring - it gave about 4000 RPM at 80 , not at all excessive .
Its cuz I is blond , innit

That what I like too see keeping the old ones alive, the gerabox should take up some of the excess and reduce the revs. My Austin had the standard low
Ratio diff through a 4 speed box and reved its balls off this was a combo of diff and gearbox, but it went like stink

With the type 9 and most other Ford boxes you may require extensive floor mods to clear the gear change remote.
Some of the 1960s Ford GB 4 speed Cortina boxes had bolt on remote gear lever extensions so would be simpler to fit ---- basically they used a
107e/105e casing but with remote gear lever extension bolted on in place of the "magic wand" gear lever.

is it possible to change the first 3 gears of a type 9 to be the same ratios as the 4 speed box and just have the fifth to act as an overdrive?
I really like my 4 speed for acceleration just the times i do want to 'cruise' on the motorway it would be nice to not be revving the arse
off it

I'm not sure what the difference is between 5th on a type 9 and 4th on a 4speed. Probably not a huge amount of difference but enough to make
crusing pleasurable.

Looks like 76.9 mph in 5th with 185/60/13's & 4.1 ratio diff which i would be happy with.
Is that right? I'm not good with stuff like this!!

as far as i can work out 4th on a 4spd is a 1:1 which is them same as the type 9 so would be a decent drop in rpm

Thats what i thought.
I have decided to get a type 9 so if i upgrade to a 1600 or bigger i can still use the gearbox and i won't have to re do the trans tunnel.

My Fury had a 1300 with 3.89 and 4 speed box and motorway cruising wasn't that pleasant due to the high revs but it *was* livable with - did Le
Mans with it like this.
4.1 would be painful
3.89 and 5 speed box = easy cruising at 70+.
If you don't mind highish revs, your 100e will be fine just by doing one of the mods.
If, on the other hand, you're happy cruising at 60-65 with 70-75 just on the wrong side of painful for long distance, then just run it as you
originally planned...
All IMHO, of course..

I will most likely just be buzzing about and i have no plans to go anywhere far away so i'm sure it will be fine. If not i'll swap it out
when a new engine gets put in.
