Calculating Shock Spring Strength
Hi guys,
Still cracking on with the S2000 build, the propshaft is now in after a bit of fiddling - all looking good.
Sorting the pedal box out for some sexy top mounted versions and generally getting my act together.
One thing I have noticed though is the shocks seem to look a little weedy now that I've ripped out the ZETEC and put in the S2000.
Is there a formula for calculating the spring strength based on axle weight etc etc - if so - could someone share it with me
Also - I'm guessing it also depends on spring length and ride height - due to varying spring compression.
I have GAZ shocks 2.25" (IIRC) and 8 or 9" springs (IIRC)
Cheers,
Murray

There can't be much more than about 10kg difference between the two engines and although the shocks may look 'weedy', if they were
OK with the Zetec, I'm sure they'll be fine with the S2000.
If you remove the spring from the shock, the rate should be painted or engraved on the top. Just make a note of what they are and stick them back on.
Once you've got the car back on the road, try them out and replace the springs with heavier/lighter if required.

According to my research:
2 Litre Zetec with standard manifold and fluids is - 118 Kg
Honda S2000 - 158 Kg
Personally I'd increase spring rate by 50lbs or so - the Honda engine is very heavy apparently.

Thanks Phil, Steve,
I think the Honda Gearbox is also quite a bit heavier than the Type 9 taken out.
Perhaps it's a trick of eye - but it does appear to be sagging a little bit.
Will pop the springs off at the weekend and take a look
Regards,
Murray
