IRS plan needed
iceT - 15/8/03 at 04:01 AM

Hi all... anyone has any detail plans on IRS?

I am building book chasis but with IRS. I've got RC's book, McSorley's drawings (excellent stuff) and also the Avon book. However, the plan on avon book for the IRS is rather vague. So I wonder if anyone has done a detail drawings for IRS? Mr. McSorley? or where I can find one??

Cheers everyone, have a great weekend!

Hi IceT,

Working on it mate....

I just picked up a Sierra (Merkur) the other week (freebie!). The bits are laying on the driveway at the moment.

I have to find a few extra days to model the whole thing... I will offer Sierra IRS plans at some point, wishbones and all.

jim,
we are in the process of ripping up our sierra 4x4 ghia estate at the moment for our dedion rig.. if you want any measurements / photos etc of our stuff, let us know.

Cool Jim! cant wait...

I've produced a CAD solid model of the tiger rear end, if I get a chance I'll produce some drawing from it for you.

Regards,

Kingr

Thanks Kingr!

When can we expect Jim McSorley to publish these drawings on his site?

I don't think we can *expect* Jim to do anything of the sort- it's only been done so far as a favour to everyone.

If you're desperate for IRS rusiq then you'll have to design you own.

What I would recommend, though, is for you to buy the De Dion system from GTS (or MK as I think they do one now) and use the Sierra diff.

Hope that helps,
James

Jonr - 6/5/05 at 11:44 AM

and the GTS De Dion set up already has a drawing in PDF on the GTS site.

GTS De Dion PDF

full drawing for the GTS locost are £10 from GTS.

I haven't bought them but thinking about doing this for my rear end.

I have finally started building my chassis, now I might have to wait for these plans!!

Kingr - if you can produce some workable drawings for the Tiger Avon that would be great, but I have heard that the geometry is not brilliant so was thinking I might have to modify it to get things better. Trying to make sense of all the info I have collected on suspension systems at the moment.

want2race - 6/5/05 at 12:13 PM

i havent seen any IRS plans.. Its a hell of a lot of work to do it and I dont think its worth it!

see my site for more pics but I havent got any written plans

kreb - 6/5/05 at 01:49 PM

Sorry to be a thick head here, but why not copy existing geometry? I've got a Miata sitting at my dad's house waiting for a frame. Presumably I could pull measurements off it, and just change materials to suit the Locost?

andyps - 6/5/05 at 02:43 PM

I'm sure you could do that - I don't have a Miata outside though! It is always possible to measure other seven type cars however.

pbura - 6/5/05 at 02:57 PM

There's a lot more to IRS than slapping a Tiger or other rear end onto the back of a Locost. The car really should be considered as a system.

Wishbone suspensions cannot have roll centers that are too high (more than about 3 inches) or they will produce excessive jacking forces. Because the Locost was designed for a solid axle having a roll center height of about 7", the front roll center needs to be lowered from its present ~3" to 1" - 1.5". This is assuming that the IRS rear will be at the 3" target.

Having lower front and rear roll centers will produce a lot more body roll, so anti-roll bars should be considered. What size? Who knows? Calculated estimates can be used, but coming up with good spring, damper, and ARB settings will probably take some trial + error = $$$.

If you think I'm blowing smoke, take a look at what C*terham did with their IRS car:

BTW, builder Mix has done a very nice job with his IRS layout, details here:

DISCLAIMER: The above representations are based only on a lot of study and thinking, so may be discarded at will.

Is that a preview of Jim's drawings?
