First fire up.

Good day today on my Indy build. Finally got everything connected, turned the key, a few splutters and away she fired. Did notice that the exhaust was glowing red after only a few mins, is this right?

sounds too lean...so not good really - you could burn a piston. richen up your carb/carbs

To lean or fireing timing not good...

how well does it runs idle?

escapes should become 300degrees near the head..

Tks

If it's glowing red on idle the igntion timing could be to far retarded-or is it advanced, can't remember which way round, but not set right anyway.

To Lean a mixture and/or timing retarded

I think I set the initial timing at 6 degrees and as I dont have a timming light yet what way should I turn the dizzy? This is on a 2lt pinto with mild road cam.

Remove dizzy cap and spin engine on key, note which way rotor arm spins. Then loosen dizzy and turn same way(off top of my head think it's clockwise) to advance timing. Think thats right.
If you are running a performance cam with a vernier power pulley this might explain why your original setting could be wrong.

No, to advance the timing turn the opposite way to running rotation, turning it the same way will retard the timing even more.

Quite right Chippy, I stand corrected- It's been a long day!
