stuey39 - 6/2/06 at 11:11 PM

Hi all, does the MK exhaust need to have a heat shield fitted for the sva test?

Stuart.

This Q needs careful reply................................................. No.

(My Pinto engine silencer hardly gets hot enough during normal driving to worry - some exit on passenger side so you have even less to worry about!!)

So you don't need one then!!!!

DarrenW - 7/2/06 at 10:00 AM

Nope - you dont have to have one. This is an odd ball area with SVA. The exhaust can be as hot as you like but if it has a sharp edge (and this includes any external clamps) it will fail!!! I had to put a small plastic cap on the end of the threaded clamp bar (M7?? - mikalor clamp). I also rotated the clamp such that the cone they use had little chance of touching.
Another area to watch - the silencer is mounted to side panel with a fiesta engine mount (3mm ali plate bonded to inside of side panel to spread the load). The front and back face of the mount is steel (rubber sandwiched in the middle). The steel bits constitute an edge. i made a curved ali cover, trimmed it with u-trim and bonded to top of the mount (used cable tie to hold it while bond&seal cured). This passed SVA (no pics im afraid - it 'dropped' off after).
Where the silencer clamped to the down pipe i had to blunt the edge with emery tape. Tester ran his fingers all round any edges and welds (once silencer cooled down).
