well ive got everything wired up to how the diagram says (i think).

but all im getting is:

turn the key - can hear fuel pump priming, the valves on throttle bodies flicker, and get a continuous whine from the throttle servo motor.

but when pressing the start button, nothing happens at all.


so any ideas on where to start? or common problems?

have you by-passed the side stand switch and clutch switch?

Hi as danny says if the clutch and side stand arnt joined together the start switch wont operate as i cannot find the earth needed to activate solenoid also check the 2 thin blue wires in the red connector near the main ignition wires are joined together as well
any probs gis a ring cant do much else as too much snow up here 5ft drifts at workshop door last night

But surely side stand and clutch only matter if the bike is in gear?

i can start my bike with the stand down or up

yes ive got the clutch switch joined, the side stand switch is joined, the lean angle cut off switch ive got a 470 ohm resister between the yellow/green and black/blue wire, the stop switch is joined.

the earth for the starter button, ive got going straight to the main earthing point?


the 2 thin blue wires by ign do these just get joined then, rather than going into the ign switch?

actually i think it might be something to do with the starter motor connections, ive got it like this:

red cable from battery to left of starter relay.

black cable from right of starter solenoid to bolt ontop of starter motor.

black cable from battery to bolt on engine.


but the bolt on top of the starter motor has continuity with all the engine earth points and chassis.

so how is that going to work?


or is it supposed to be like that?

little update, i realised the engine was in gear, so got in in neutral, reconnected everything.

now it is turning over, but not starting. but is making some poping/coughing sounds.


there is definatly sparks (as can see and smell them coming through the cylinders).

and there is fuel reaching the fuel rail.

so any ideas?

or could it just be not quite enough power in the battery? im using a 60ah car battery so should have pleanty of power.(i will give it a nice charge tonight anyway)

Appparently the r1 is quite sensitive to battery power. The old gel r1 battery on mine would spin it over for fun but it wouldn't fire. Put a odyssey pc680 on and it fires instantly. Probably overkill but it works a treat. If you're using a car battery though I'd imagine it'd be ok.

You say you have a spark and fuel in the rail, but are the injectors firing?

The plugs up very quickly, if its firing and fueling then its probably just fouled up.

Mine was a right pig to start to begin with, try taking the plugs out, clean/dry them, spin the engine with the plugs out and check you get fuel coming out of each cylinder, then pop them back in again.

Check your TPS position is correct (use diagnostic mode on the clock)

Once running its worth checking the balance too, one cylinder was slightly out on mine and caused it to run really badly when the cold start enrichments were on.

Ive got it running. I had the H.T leads the wrong way around.

After swapping them around it started straight away. It is a tad noisy mind with no exhaust.
