light "ish" rear diff/shafts and uprights
FlansS14 - 20/10/10 at 10:51 AM

Does anyone know of a light "ish" rear set up ie diff/shafts/uprights.

its for an offroad trials car (sporting trials) and i want to convert it from the old english axel to IRS. it only needs to take 100bhp max...and even thats on mud?

any ideals. Sierra seams a tad weighty.

Many thanks

Honda HRV
Mazda MX5
Freelander

6.5inch sierra is a bit lighter, diff is 3kg lighter and driveshafts are a bit lighter too.

Tricky to find, but easy to engineer as mounting is the same as 7inch diff.

I seem to recall approx 30ks for an lsd sierra diff

Freelander diffs are about 15kgs.

1.6 Mx5 diff is 23kg

The mx5 shafts are much lighter than the sierra equivalent. and the rear uprights are pretty svelte too. I could weigh some tonight if you want.

If you dont mind that would be cool

Freelander...never thought of that, just asumed they'd be really heavy.

i thought about Suzuki Capachino too but there quite rare for breaking. i dont wanna spent mega bucks.

Ford 6.5inch sierra diff weighs 18.5kg
Ford 7inch sierra open diff weighs 22.5kg

Both ratios around 3.5

These are both ones with push in shafts.
I just weighed these now, as I had them in the shed.

The 6.5inch driveshafts are also a bit lighter than some of the later chunky versions.

now thats commitment!! nice one.

Yer strength is not a huge factor. i could make the uprights and bolt a hub into it but the sierra one aint the lightest!
