I am in need of some advice from the LCB collective please.

I am part way through my MS1 build and am at the second test point, where i need to
connect it to a computer to test the com port.
My PC is uncle bucked so that is out.
I have three laptops in the house but non of them have a serial port but all
have usb ports.

I have read quite a lot about adaptors not working well with MS and MJ,so am
reluctant to spend money on something that i think wont work.
Has anyone used such an adaptor with any success and if so what make/model is it?

It tends to be the 99p with £10 postage Chinese imports which don't work.

Go for the Prolific or FTDI chipset, from a PC outlet, the one man band type shops are best, and you should be ok.

I got the one from maplin and that seems to work.

Maplin ones are Prolific chipset. FDTI chipset is also alright. You are looking at £15 - £20.

I have managed with the cheaper versions (last one was £1.79 including shipping) and it was fine (have used it for programming, and big 50min logs) but I get the odd drop-out and assume it is due to this.

When using these adaptors you sometimes need to go into control panel, hardware, device manager to find which com port has been allocated to the adaptor then set the com port in megajolt tune or the megasquirt equivalent, usually under the options tab, a bit confusing in megajolt as there are 2 option tabs.
