ignition key switch type thing

for those who are not using a key switch in the steering collumn, what have you used?

I need to get one, but the ones i;ve seen all look a bit flimsy. i want something with a substantial looking key (like you'd get on a production car)

i've got a starter button, and little other electrickery, so i guess i only really need something with on/off.

what have you got?

How about getting one from a production car and mounting it in the dash?

they don't normally have all the right bits (like a threaded body and locking ring) do they? never really looked at one, but i don't think they'll be all that easy

The only reason why modern cars have a substantial keys is that it sometimes takes quite a a lot of force to disengage the steering lock, any kind of key switch is not going to be much of an anti-theft measure.

a good point. i guess the reason why i want something that looks fairly sold, is because it the key is built to be strong, the lock should be built as well too. in my head anyway

Series Land Rover, well, at least the military one have a ignition lock that can be panel mounted.

wait a bit and see if I can google one - I think also VWP sell the same lock.... watch this space ....

here we go: (as usual, piccy is linky)

and as I thought, same one but more expensive on VWP

Work out how many positions you need on it as there are a few types.

i had seen the landrover one on ebay, looks alright, key looks a bit fidly, but if it keeps iva happy...

as shaun says, i don't need many positions, only really on/off i suppose. got no radio or anything, just need ignition, and starter is by the button. even if one has off, 1, 2, start then i can only use the first position til i get another

I fitted one of these. It works well enough.
