Basically as the title would this be ok it would be a mechanical bulb type capillary tube (smiths) I would like a oil temp gauge and already have a redundent water temp gauge
any help much appriciated!

I dont see why not providing you can put the bulb in the oil flow circuit.

well if we weld an adapter in the sump and put ti there, wouldn't it give the right oil temp?

As long as the temp scale is suitable, then they should work in exactly the same way

yes - I weld a nut to the sump of my V8 in the land rover and fitted the Smiths bulb type oil temp guage.

it differs from the water guage in that is starts at 80 degree as opposed to 40 (?) and to somewhat higher temperatures.

In my case, the needle hardly moves off the 80 degree mark.

Oil gets a lot hotter than water, up to 250F, water can't get that hot unless under extreme pressure.
