starter motor direction
Lightning - 4/10/09 at 05:11 PM
Which direction does a honda or rover starter motor turn - viewed fron the opposite end to the gear.
My reverse gear attempt goes forward...bum
t16turbotone - 4/10/09 at 05:16 PM
is there any way to reverse polarity on starter motor?
theconrodkid - 4/10/09 at 05:17 PM
they do spin the wrong way,can you mount it the other war round, should go backwards then....or get another starter
Lightning - 4/10/09 at 05:25 PM
no room on the other side. The reason i want to know which way they rotate is to change the starter. I think I have a Honda civic and hope the rover
goes the opposite way
matt_claydon - 4/10/09 at 05:37 PM
IIRC Honda engines are known for going the 'wrong' way.

You need Honda VFR400 nc30 starter motor - it spins the opposite way to the rest because of the bikes gear driven cams.
Do not attempt to reverse the polarity on the one you have - it will go bang, I know I tried it twice
hope that helps

There is usually an arrow stamped on Bosch starters, I used a VAG starter, small, powerfull and runs the correct way

Thats great but I cant quite make out which direction it is turning. Could you tell me which way. Many thanks

Looking at starter from the gear end, anti clockwise. I looked at Ford starters, they run clockwise, well the ones I looked at did.

Brilliant. Thats what i want. Any Idea the model etc.
Looking at Z cars they put the starter entering from the other side. This would mean major alterations to the chassis etc, so a couterclockwise
solution would be far easier.
I thought the Honda would do, as the engine rotated the other way, but alas the starter enters from the gearbox side and hence the rotates the same
way.
Looking into the Honda VFR400 route still as well

If a starter motor was just a DC motor then it should run in reverse. I'm curious as to what extra gubbins they have which is polarity
sensitive.

Just checked and yes it rotates counter clockwise and has the right number of teeth. (wish I had)
