Iv just been looking through the IVA manual and i noticed it doesn't say that the side lights and headlights have to be switched on separately. Have i got this right? If so, it would be ok to have the headlight switch operate the headlights and sidelights at the same time therefor, not needing a sidelight switch?
I would say you do need to be switched seperatley as why do you fail if you dont have side lights.

You don't need to switch them separately. First switch position side lights on, second position side lights and headlights on, as normal in
production cars. If I remember rightly for SVA (don'd know about IVA) the lights are wired with permanent live so that the side lights can be
left on if required without the ignition.
IVA manual section 22 note 4 says
"Must be switched on and off by the operation of one switch".
This is position one of the light switch, this does not mean a separate switch but that all side lights must come on when operating the switch.

You know, the amount of 'loomin questions you ask about electrics and the amount of effort for everyone answering them, I sure wish you'd
bought that Premier Loom!
The total bandwidth and time cost must have exceeded the ~£100+P&P now anyway!
Cheers,
James
