Ok so ive botched together a wiring loom as i just want to test run the engine before fitting it.

Ive wired the coil as marked, ive got it cranking, fuel coming thru but No spark
there is one wire coming from the dizzy (points based) should this be live or earth?

live from ign switch to + on the coil,- on the coil goes to the dizzy

ok connected there, still no spark
any pointers

If its a pinto set up would you have the Amplifier connected.

it is a pinto set up, what does the amplifier look like is it a little black thing with one terminal on and a single wire?

I also have an earth connected to the - terminal on the coil, is this right or should it just be connected to the points?

just to the points, they earth the coil

Disconnect the earth you have to the coil negative. Might be worth cleaning the points and setting the points gap as well. Motorcraft points gap should be 0.025" (25 thou) Can't remember the gap for Bosche but 0.018" may be right? There are a couple of mods that can be carried out on the Motorcraft distributors which help give a stronger spark, 1 if fitted bipass the black box on the side of the distributor and 2 fit a small earth wire from the points screw to the base plate securing screw which reduces voltage drop across the points/earthHTH Mel

points are brand new, condensor seems to be to, will disconnect that earth. they are set at 0.0025 thou

is there anything to do with setting the dizzy up on fitting? position etc?

Distributor will need setting up but that shouldn't stop you getting a spark . How are you testing for spark? try putting a plug on the main HT lead , if you then have a spark then the Distributor cap/rotor arm are at fault.Did you wipe the new points before fitting as they my well have a coating of oil on the contacts?Try putting a clean piece of paper between the contacts and pulling it out a few times, coil can be tested by fitting the HT lead ,running a wire from the coil negative and with a live feed to the positive just momentarily touch the other end of the negative wire to earth . put the other end of the HT lead near an earth , you should then get a spark if the coil is working. It's just a case of tracing where the fault is then.

points are clean, new distributor cap and rotor arm, coil is new too, so bleeping strange lol

The single wire from the distributor is a ground (from memory), and should be bolted to the chassis. It might pay to get a new condenser, as you may have damaged it by reverse polarity, and for the price of them.....

If its like my old Crossflow, it had a start relay, which bypassed everything other than the starter. Make sure youre coil is fed from a permanent switched live, not from the low side of the start relay.

Check the coil. I went round in circles for ages and it turned out to be the new coil i had bought was U/S.

Failing that, maybe i could come and cast an eye over it one night in the week if youre really struggling.

The single wire from the distributor goes to the coil negative NOT earth! The distributor will earth through the cylinder block, the coil doesn't need to be earthed.

ok tried that, no spark, lol next idea?

rusty nuts - 21/11/09 at 03:05 PM

You have battery voltage at the coil positive terminal but have you checked the voltage when cranking? Have you tried opening the points with a screwdriver when the ignition is on and the HT lead near to an earth? If still no spark have you tried touching the coil negative to earth? If you still have no spark then the coil is cattle trucked

Just done all this on my Lada.

Absolutely zilch at the dizzy, renewed the points, rotor arm, condenser, cap

Like the previous post said if its all connected up with no breaks in the wiring, points gapped and you have nothing at the points when you open them with the ign on...#

think coil.

Please make sure you have 12v+ or thereabouts into the coil with the ign on, the other side of the coil has the single wire to the dizzy.

It took me 2/3 days in the rain working through my fantastic Lada wiring to get it running.

Fired first time when the new coil went on.

Good luck
