Sierra wiper switch rating?
David Jenkins - 3/12/09 at 04:50 PM

Short and simple question...

Anyone know whether the Sierra column switch can handle the wiper motor current directly, or will relays be required?

Anyone been running their wipers directly using the switch without relays?

cheers in advance...
David

I used a relay

I used a relay but only so I had intermittent wipers

So if I want two speeds I'll need 2 relays (I haven't given it any thought though!).

What did Ford do in the Sierra?

I'm not sure, but I think that the early ones (square hazard switch) switched directly, but the later ones (round hazard switch) used relays and the later switches probably aren't up to switching directly.

Steve is correct Sierra square hazard switch = no relay, later round hazard needs relays.
Beware of the V+ V- switching, some switch the power some the earth.
Personally, relays are a safety measure.

It's all very well talking about the shape of the hazard light button - the wiper switch is the one WITHOUT the hazard button attached!

I'll forgive you all anyway - I've decided to make up a bit of electronic wizardry to drive the relays, with an added intermittent wipe included. Or maybe just a few relays wired up... I haven't decided yet!
