New steering column or not?
speedyxjs - 9/1/10 at 10:15 AM

A few weeks ago, i accidentally sent too much current through my steering column giving plenty of smoke and some melted wires.

There were only two wires affected and although the plestic coating got very hot it has only split in one section (from battery to the plug at the back of the steering column).

now i have been looking for a new steering column but after having noticed yesterday that the wires under the column havnt split, could i get away with just replacing the split wire?

could you not jst try replacing them and checking all the circuits? Might be worth doing if ouve got a bit of cable lying around?

They circuits all seem fine. Iv had all the electrics working already (wrapped the split wire in insulation tape).

You could put some heat shrink sleeving along its length

sounds like it should be fine then if youve tested all the circuits, some new wires should see it right

Great, that'll save me some money

I'd definately replace the wires too - for peace of mind as much as anything. If its hard to thread them through then solder on a new wire to one end and then pull it through. Thats how i did a 4x4 radio aerial recently rather than struggling behind the dashboard for ages.
