The sensor I got with my 2nd hand gauges is identical to this one:

I believe it works from passing propshaft bolts.
Can people show me how they have mounted similar sensors? There doesn't seem to be an easy way..

Hi, not exactly the same, a Koso sensor, but similar...
We have glued 4 magnets on the propshaft with some metal glue, exactly spaced the magnets, and bolted the sensor to the propshaft chassis rails using
two metal plates.
I hope it makes sense...

thanks for the response. Unfortunately mine works by sensing metal moving through the magnetic field of the VR sensor.
I think this means I have to use the propshaft to diff bolts in the same way as you have used magnets.
my difficulty is visualising how to position the sensor so it is face on with the bolts without the sensor mount trying to interfer with the propshaft
itself!

Do a search on my posts, I asked this a few months back and I received lots of helpful posts containing photos of peoples solutions
so you would recommend fitting the £50 ford type 9 speedo adaptor from burtons?
In my situation Craig the answer is a big YES! Every solution I saw and tried to implemnt was scuppered by lack of room to work to get it fitted and
as the car was only just complte I didn't want to strip it down I just wanted to drive it.
Only needed to remove a panel from the trans tunnel, most difficult bit is removing the circlip to remove the cut off old speedo cable I used to stop
oil leaking as it points slightly down. I recomend a small angle mirror like a ladies make up mirror to allow you to see what you're doing.
I know the sensor costs a bit but the result of a nice steady speedo reading and not worryin g about loosing magnets etc made it more than worth
while.

This fits in place of the speedo cable on the side of a Type 9 box - not a lot of use to you, perhaps!
did you make that david, or is that the innards of the one supplied by burton power?
No pics but mine is similar to Snuggs'.
But the bracket is mounted to a rear bulkhead chassis rail instead of a diff bolt.
Oh, and mine uses magnets.... which are sunk into the diff flange and then epoxyed (sp?) in place.
But nearly the same!

For the diff bolts: soak them overnight in penetrating oil, then the next day hit them with a big hammer, then try to undo them... It worked for
me...

dont worry guys, ive gone for the expensive but lazy route of adapting my ford gearbox to use an electronic sender
If I had a lathe, then I too would have made something like David Jenkins' one.
I haven't so used bits of aluminium tube, lumiwelded together, brass spindle in bearing for the chopper wheel and hall effect sensor with magnet
to look like this:
Not as neat as DJs I grant you but it works.
If you can, fit the sensor to the gearbox.

It was made by me - spent quite a while on the daily train working it out!
That one uses a hall-effect sensor, but if I did another I'd probably use an optical sensor instead.
