IVA and indicator repeater positioning
chris-p-duck - 28/1/10 at 09:33 PM

Hi all,

I am pondering where to locate my side repeaters and have looked in the IVA manual but came away none the wiser so I thought I would seek the view of you knowledgeable folk.

I have bought some of those neat LED repeaters and would like to mount them on the forward edge (outside face) of the rear wheel arch (its a seven by the way!). Is that legal? The IVA details on the positioning seems really vague.......

Thanks in advance...

Chris

mine are mounted on the side of my scuttle
from what i can see the IVA manual says that they have to be visible from 5 degrees from behind and within 2600mm from the front of the car thats all
you can see them in my avatar they are triangle ones

this really is one of those dodgy ones.

im sure ive heard a story about someone failing because the repeaters were visible from the front of the vehicle!!

boggles the mind.

I will be fitting mine when the arrive high up on the scuttle, just make sure they arent blocked by your rear arches from behind.

Also I think they need to be a minimum distance from the rear??

Perhaps not much help but when I SVA'd my Luego Velocity in 2005, the repeaters were fine in the side body panel just below the scuttle.
As I remember, 7 type cars were an exception to the normal rules because of their design and it wasn't a requirement to be able to see the repeater from behind/front at certain angles.
Of course, I don't specifically know about IVA - maybe you could ring the test centre you're going to use and ask.

I had mine on the scuttle but when i realised they needed to be visible at 5 degrees from the rear (not possible) i have now decided to mount them on the front corners of my front wings

My research on this led me to belive that under the IVA you can no longer put them on the scuttle and pass.

I have just done this. Not as good as on the scuttle but will do until the wings fall off....

urgh, this is what REALLY f**ks me off about these tests.

TBH I'm just going to take the car as is, not bother with any of their crap and then fix any issues they raise on the day for the inevitable retest.

can you imagine how frustrating it will be if they tell you that the repeaters are a "fail" because they have forward visibility (as has happened to someone on here) even after youve gone to the effort of putting them on the wings??

I also know people have passed with them high on the scuttle so they can be seen above the rear arch - but if its a fail on that particular day, with that particular examiner, what the hell am i meant to do with the fitting holes in the scuttle??

Annoys me too. It's made all the more painful by the increased cost of the test and re-test.

I put them there after looking a caterhams and a 59 plate westfield.

Those are the cheap wings of eBay. I'm fairly sure they will fly off soon after IVA and I'll put the repeaters on the scuttle.

that was my plan until the IVA came along with its £480 test and £280 retest

i just feel that you have no control over whether you fail or not, so I have to assume its going to cost £800 just to IVA it.

DavidW - 29/1/10 at 03:21 PM

Is it really that much?

I had £90 in my mind for some reason.

A track only car is becoming an option...

cd.thomson - 29/1/10 at 03:27 PM

yes, £90 is more the DVLA cost to actually get you plates.

before tax and insurance of course..

damn... i shouldnt have started talking about this...

DavidW - 29/1/10 at 03:31 PM

Maybe I should have just torched it when I didn't finish in time for SVA?

chris-p-duck - 29/1/10 at 07:26 PM

Thanks guys! Apologies if I have opened a bit of a can of worms though.

Looks like wings might be the only sensible place to go for...........

Cheers

Chris

as i said, you're as likely to fail with them on the wings as you are high on the scuttle.
