Lighting switch wiring advice
Tris - 12/5/10 at 02:09 PM

Hello All,

Currently drawing up my wiring diagram and would be grateful if i could just run this past you all.

In my spire i am not using a 'stalk' assembly, with all the applicable buttons being installed in the dash.

Am i ok (in terms of IVA) to have one latch switch turning on both the sides and the front dips ? This switch will light up when the lights are activated.

Then, am i ok to just have another additional switch which turns on the main beam in addition to the dips ? (again with the switch illuminating when the mains are on).

Or do the dips have to be turned off when the mains are selected ?

Cheers
Tris

I think you will need three switches, one for side lights (which you would also use to illuminate switches and dials, and to switch the power to the headlight switch), one for headlights, and one to switch between dip and main beams. Side must be on with dip or main, and dip and main should not be on together.

I used a side light symbol for the side light switch, dip symbol for the headlight switch and main beam symbol for the dip/main switch.

Is an off-on(1)-on(1+2) okay for side and dipped lights; then a on-on changeover for dipped and main beam?

Thats how I did mine. You should be able to have side lights on without h/lights. If your dip and main are separate units then they should both stay on, on main beam. If they're a combined dip and main then you want the dip to go off when the main comes on; Too much heat otherwise.

Yes, a 3 way switch would do for off, side, headlight with a 2 way for dip/main. I used Savage switches though so no three way option.
