Ideally you want a fused supply going to the relay then onto the lights, as to how you feed the +Ve supply of the coil of the relay it depends when you want the lights to come on. I'd be tempted to fit a seperate switch with a tell-tale.
I have to put some spot lamps on a mates car for the Mongolian Rally.
I was thinking of taking a feed from the dipped headlight, running it to a switch and then back to a relay which the spots are connected to. Would
this be okay? My electrics isn't the best, though I did manage to wire my car up.

Sounds like a plan if the original wiring is sound! Take the supply for the relay off the battery and make sure you have a good earth.
Your spots will probably come with suitable wiring and relay anyway.

Spotlights often use as much power as a full-beam headlight - I think you'll be risking your wiring (or blowing fuses) if you do what you
suggest.
I'd bite the bullet and run new wiring back to the main fusebox, give them their own switch and fuse.
I think that's what Mistergrumpy is saying though David. Using a feed from the dipped circuit to switch the relay but take the feed for the
lights from the battery.

Ah! It wasn't clear - I thought that he meant to take the feed from the headlight itself.
Yep. ^That's the one^ Just like to run electrical stuff over a couple of times.
They only cost £4 from Newark and are going on a Vauxhal Agila for 10000 miles to Mongolia and then left there.
