also is there lots of work to be done to the wiring loom to fit one?

Depends on the radio but

There will be a permanent live, possibly a switched live, an earth and the speaker connections

as much use as an ashtray ??

I had a cd player in my 7 for a couple of years, mainly for the long old treks to the shows up north, and anything over 40mph, was impossible to hear it
