I found what i think is a flasher unit lying around, and if i can use that would save me buying another one! How can i check that it actually is a flasher unit? (it has 3 pins, is it only flasher units that have 3 pins?)

If it is a flasher unit is there any way of testing that it actually works?

how the terminals are numnbered/lettered and then we can take a small step to identifying what you have.

ahh right, what should they be for a flasher unit? I cant check til im home in a few hours.

but im pretty sure (mabye 50% ) that it was stuck in the indicator and wiper stalks from a MK3 fiesta. which is what made me assume its a flasher unit.

Can i do a bench test with a 12V battery, the unit and a bulb? just wire something in like this battery + to flasher, flasher to bulb, bulb to battery -ve, the tak the 3pin to battery -ve?

Sounds likely our fiesta has an electronic flasher unit in that position. Only has 3 pins, and as electronic should be good for LEDs or bulbs..

wihtout thinking too hard a bout it, not sure your testing is safe.

the old type using bi-metallic strip would be 2 pin, the third pin would be for the dash board lamp. these have letters,
X = 12 V
L = indicator switch
P = dahsboard warning lamp

modern electroinic units will have numbers.
49 = 12 V
49a = indicator switch
31 = 0 V

so if you have the older type, you could be shorting out the battery.

if you do insisting on testing it yourself, get a DVM and work out the resistance beetween all 3 terminals - the ones that show 0 ohm you would not connect across + and - battaray, not unless you like glowing wires and smoke.
