Hi All,

I've been working on my wiring loom and placement of the electrical bits such as fuses and relays. I've noticed that some people have mounted these bits on the front of the scuttle in the engine bay and some have mounted them under thescuttle, behind the dash.

I am currently favouring the second option as I figure they would be safer there, if a little harder to reach.

Anyone got any experiences either way or any comments????

Nick - basically as you stated. Plus it's nearer to the battery (if located as per MK Battery Tray). It is rather awkward to reach once in! We tried last night!

Cheers guys, I'm going to go for the under the dash option.

Hellfire, I am planning to make an ally plate to mount the components on and then attach it to the scuttle 'hoop' on my MK chassis. Hopefully this will allow me to have better access to the fuses if needed.

How did you do yours?

mine are a good example of how not to do it. i have 2 fuse boxes, an 8 fuse one on top of the passanger footwell, and a 4 fuse one thats bolted to a tube near the nose. a bit exposed there i think, but its all loomed now so theres no way im moving it!

In the past if I required easy access to the relays I have mounted them on the engine bulkhead but in an RS enclosure - available in polycarb, nylon or nylon coated aluminium at reasonable costs.
Cable entries can be drilled and sealed with IP grommets.
When you need access - just 4 screws to remove - ideal for storing spare fuses etc. too!

Surely they would be closer to the battery, if they were sitting on the MK battery tray. Might get a box from RS or Maplins to keep the dirt out.

I did mine under scuttle. Keeps fuses and relays nice and dry and as most of the loom runs under the scuttle and on the back of the dash it's easier to wire up and then drop the scuttle on. My dash comes out easy for major work, but in practice you won't need to get to the wiring too often. Pic on archive.

I have the original Ford main fuse box mounted close to battery in engine bay.

The 4Age fuses and relays are on an ali panel vertically mounted under scuttle.

I have modified the scuttle to contain only the wiring for the wipers along with mechanism. This is on a disconnect plug.

The dash is held by SS screws. By undoing those, plus the bolts on scuttle sides, capscrews on ali bulkhead panel and disconnecting wipers, I can lift scuttle off complete with mirrors, screen and wipers.
This leaves the wiring exposed all along the top rail for easy working on.
Takes a small amount of time but access is great once scuttle removed.
