Just wondering, with all the paraphanalia about tablets and iPads, surely there must be software/hardware out there that utilises one of these devices for a dashboard.

Had a quick search, but didn't find anything

I know that there are OBDII readers than can display this data, so there must be something more customiseable?

So it seems that you can connect up the required sensors and emulate an OBD requirement. You can then attach your PC, which would be one of these:

Obviously you'd separate the keyboard from screen.

But now you have a problem with the screen because it's not touch sensitive?

The brilliant thing about that is it will allow you to mount the screen behind a thin perspex sheet for full waterproofing. You then bung the touchscreen layer ontop and Robert is your mothers brother

Price wise, all in for less than £500, which I don't think is bad at all.

i had looked into it for the viper kit, thought it would be different, although i wasn't going for touch screen just display, there is some software called roadrunner that is also sort of what your looking for i think

A big problem is whether or not the screen is readable in direct sunlight.

I don't think you really want to be using a pc to drive it though. Even a stripped down one might take nearly a minute to boot up before you can drive off, uuugh.

Be better off using something totally solid state with a stripped out linux kernel in it, or waiting until old iPhones start going for a song...

What's the refresh rate of an OBD link when you are monitoring multiple parameters? A second or so would be fine for temperature etc. but utterly useless for RPM. Also having to wait for your dashboard to boot itself every time you start your car doesn't seem like much fun.
