Lucas Alternator Wiring - Sense Check
adrianreeve - 12/10/10 at 08:51 PM

Am I right in thinking that with my Lucas alternator with two big spade terminals and one small, that the small goes to the dash light, and either one of the large spades goes to the battery, or do they both need to go to the battery? I seem to remember someone saying that the two large spades are connected internally anyway. Also, does it need a seperate earth, it doesn't have an earth connection, so I'm guessing not.

Cheers

Adrian

Big ones to the battery

Little one to the charge light.

I recently took my Lucas alt apart to replace the regulator, and yes they are internally connected, in fact they are the legs of a U shaped piece of metal. It earths through its mounting.

On some Lucas ACR alternators they weren't connected --- however any one you are likely to encounter these days are likely to be internally connected.

However burning of the spade connections due to arcing is a common problem with this type of connector as the spade connectors are only rated to 35amps For this reason I would recommend running two B+ wires one to the battery or connection on the starter solenoid and one to the fuse box.
