Hi folks,

I got a smith speedo for the car,, but not sure about wires. It is cable driven so easy to do, there is a little box with connectors on the back of it. Also where can I can the bulbs for it?Any help on this would be appreciated.

Thanks

if from an older car (eg like the spitfire outside my house) then it could well be a voltage regulator for ither instruments. If that is the case I can helb with the bulb holders too, but a pic required.

The box is a voltage stablizer, not required to run the speedo. As for bulbs, you'll need bulb holders and bulbs, try Moss Europe, Leacy MG, AutoSparks or any of the other suppliers of "classic" cars.

Seeb the picture, yep voltage regulator thingy, it should give a steady 10volts for the fuel/temp gauges in 60/70/early80's cars (BL)

Unscrew it and flog it on ebay

PM me an address and I can sort some bulbholders for you.

You can get the speedo calibration in turns per mile from the dial. If you look at the very bottom of the dial in a tiny font you will see a number between approximately 750 and 1350 this is the speedo calibration in turns per mile.

Hi folks,

Thanks for the input on this, much appreciated. Britishtrident you mentioned another thing I am not sure about. Calibration......how is this done?

Thanks

It might not need done depends on the TPM of the speedo and the TPM of the drive train as far as I can seem most Fords are standardised on 1000tpm and a lot of speedos sold at autojumbles are from Triumphs which are also 1000tpm, of course wheel & tyre combinations throw a spanner in the works.

You have to test how many turns the speedo cable makes for say 20 turns of the rear wheels and from that work out many times it turns for each mile.

Speedy cables should be able to recalibrate for you if required.

There is a way to do it yourself. Have a look at this write up: http://triumph.daveola.com/NOTES/Speedo_Repair.pdf

I used a Smiths speedo as a mechanical tach on my car, recalibrated it by using the guide.

Thanks for all your help with this.

Speedy Cables will calibrate your speedometer for you. There is a form that you can download from their website into which you can put the required data; all very easy and in my experience the speedometer will be absolutely accurate providing the measurements you have taken are also accurate.
