Morning all

I've already contacted a couple of members here after reading their posts but thought I'd try here for assitance as well to get my question to a broader audience.

My wife's bought me a gear knob for my birthday with a built in engine starter button. The instructions aren't very clear at all and the gear knob comes with one of those sealed relay/control boxes. I've noticed that it's identical the contol box on the starter button sold by CBS part no. RPBENG

I'm considering ditching this and wiring to an orinary relay but before deciding thought I'd ask here if anyone has bought this unit and if so could they please provide connection details to the following wires

red - according to my instruction goes to terminal 15?
green - according to the instructions goes to terminal 15 IGN
green - goes to terminal 50on ignition which provides power to starter

oh black goes to earth, that one I understand

any assistance much appreciated.

just a wild guess here, terminal 15 is an ignition switched live (or an it could be a permanent live,your choice) 15 ign would have to be an ignition switched live, then an earth and a wire to the starter solenoid.
without looking at the wiring diagram its hard to be sure if you need two separate live feeds or if you could use one and connect to both terminals 15.
if it is a typical mechanical relay both terminal 15's could be the same wire split into two (but it must be an ignition switched supply) relays need earthing to work and the starter is the switched consumer. it seems to be overly complicated to use a relay for the starter cct. it draws almost no current and relays are not terribly reliable.
solid state "relays" (some form of transistor) are much more reliable but not 100%. you don't need either for a starter switch.
Unless the relay needs two separate sources to prevent accidental starter operation (via another switch).....both to be operated at the same time to start the car.
the starter button on a gearstick? seems odd and asking for trouble, every time you change gear there must be a possibility of hitting the starter........is it an over drive switch? that would require a relay to operate the overdrive solenoid.

just did a search....yup starters on gear knobs do exist......I must get out more. comments above still stand.

thanks for the feedback snowy. There is no wiring diagram, that's my problem just a picture of the relay/controller with a description of where each wire connects to. I'll probably scan the document and post it so people can see for themselves.

As for the button being on the gear stick, it's under a hinged flip up lid so when not in use it looks like a normal gear knob, very 007

I can always count on Mr Whippy to provide a post when I'm asking electrical questions. Good to see you haven't let me down

I've also emailed CBS incase they're feeling generous to provide info on how their product is wired seeing it has the same relay controler unit and I've spent a fair bit with them over the years.
