Hi guys. To summarize, car wont start, it clunks but doesnt turn over. As far as i can see, the solenoid moves the cog but doesnt seem to close the
circuit to the motor (tested with multimeter off the car). Ive taken it apart as far as i can, but cant get into the solenoid itself. So two
questions, does anyone know how to get into this part, and are they replaceable seperately to the starter itself?
I suppose i could ring a shop tomorrow, but was just wondering for tonight!
Cheers.
there is a link from the solenoid to the motor which can corrode and fail check that first

Had (amongst others) this problem with my Dad's Grand (4.0) recently. He fitted a replacement starter (ebay, £20) but it took only a few minutes in a vice with a good dousing of WD40/etc to clean up the old one which now sits on the shelf as a good spare (I have a 4.0 Cherokee myself). Its was basically just gunked up around the dog/solenoid/shoe which limited the movement sufficiently to prevent it making the high current connection part of the solenoid.
many thanks for the help guys, im going to have a fiddle with the jump leads on it now!
Ah ,JEEP , Just Enough Essential Parts!
It did turn out to be a bad connection, i spotted that the terminal looked a bit melted!
You can slag jeeps off but its a lot of car for the money! Shame its so thirsty.
Must be the permanent 4WD of the Grand - my "normal" Cherokee 4.0 manages 20mpg quite easily but I do have the option of running in 2WD mode..
