This is according to diagrams I have found online various places, for an 8 pin switch.
One of the pins, 49a I think, is supposed to go to the Flasher Relay. Now, apparently, there is an internal flasher relay for the indicators (and
corresponding pins for left and right indicators), but it needs an external one for the hazards themselves. Is this correct?
Also, when it says: "to flasher relay and hazard lights", what does this mean? Does it mean I need to run another two wires from this pin to
the indicator lights, and if so , what is stopping everything from going on when say, left indicator is chosen, since they are joined together?
I am very confused.
on my golf 2001 model the flasher unit was connected directly to the back of the hazard switch so everything went via the hazard switch
Yup on my 1999 audi s3, The relay was in with the hazard switch/lights unit.....
But do you see what I mean by joining them together and having everything go on at once when the indicators are selected? This is why I had so many
diodes in my previous arrangement (using a completely different switch). I ended up with something like 8 diodes and 6 junction boxes with around 30
attachment points: brake lights: 2 diodes, indicators: 2 diodes, hazards: 2 diodes, tail lights: 2 diodes. There is only one tail light that does
everything, with 2 wires plus earth. I have something approaching spaghetti again under my dash. I am clearly missing something in how to do this.
I still don't understand where this hazard switch pin goes. OK, it goes to the hazard relay - where does the other pin on the flasher go?
Reading about this, and having people try to help from thousands of kms away doesn't work! Nobody will look at my car here because they are
afraid of it. Mechanics just plug things in nowadays. I am so close to just putting it all together and finishing. Just in time for 6 months of
snow.

Am I reading it correctly that you only have 1 bulb per side at the rear which performs all functions, e.g. tail light, brake light and indicator?
How does that work? for instance how do you see the brake lights if the tail lights are on?
I think this may be at the heart of your problems and why nobody is able to help as we in the UK all run 3 or 4 bulbs per side.

Agreed. I will try the wire to a + ve hazard and go from there. It hit me last night that the wire is likely supposed to go to a relay that already
has power, and that this pin is looking for juice.
My switch is most like the last one. One is unmarked, and on mine it is 58b, which goes to the instrument lighting + ve.

I was wrong.
It joins them together on the inside of the switch, but only when the internal hazard relay is closed. 49 is +ve, and 49a is out to the indicator
switch. The L and R pins go to the lights themselves.

thought it all looked pretty good, hooked up the battery, nothing. at one point things went poof and sparks came out of somewhere but nothing - no lights, no fuel pump, no windshield washer, no brake light, fuses are all still good. I officially give up. that's it with wiring.

I appreciate the efforts after my cries for help, but if I am not up to it. I am going to hire someone to look at it.
