starter motor problem
alland - 24/8/04 at 07:15 PM

I have been doing some rewiring on my sierra based 2.0l car and now have a problem where the starter motor continued to run after engine starts. What have i done or missed to cause this ? Any help would be appreciated

Have you used the Sierra ignition switch. The black and red wire is the solenoid wire, it sounds like you've used the black and yellow instead.

does the starter start turning before you fully turn the key? if so its wired wrong. If it just starts cranking like it should (ie on the sprung turn of the key), but then wont stop, then it is wired wrong.

But which is it?

I am using the sierra ignition switch.

The engine starts at the second position, before the spring part of the switch comes in to play.

Just solved this problem myself, it sounds like you have the switch wired up wrong.
It made me jump about 2 foot in the air when I turned the key to position II to check other electrics and the engine started crancking!

Like Peteff says, check that the Black/Red wire on the switch going to the starter solenoid, that should sort it.

Thanks folks, I checked the wiring and it was reversed at the switch. Cranks over ok now. Just need to get it started now!!
