Flashing an LED
lsdweb - 19/4/12 at 10:56 AM

Hi All

I have an LED shift light (ignition feed and switched earth by the ECU).

I want to be able to make this LED flash in a certain circumstance - any thoughts on a simple option?

Not sure what you mean really?? If its controlled by the ecu the you will need to add an aditional circuit to make it flash. If you want it to flash when the ecu close the earth sitch then just buy a flashing LED (all the circuitry is built in to it). I have a flashing high output led for my oil pressure switch.

Yeah, sorry, not very clear!

I want it to work as a normal shift light, controlled by the ECU, but I also want it to flash (when I select a certain engine map which is my startline map )

So what I need is some kind of simple circuit to switch it to earth on/off/on etc...

I could use a relay but that seems like overkill!

OK so when you select your startline map then your ecu would need to send a signal/ output to one of its pins in order for you to do this. OR be programmed internally to do it on the existing shift light pin.
I'm not sure if this is possible though. You wont get it to flash on one map, and not the other, without the ecu telling it to though IMHO.

I'll use a double pole to switch the map so the switch can control the 'circuit' fr the flashing lamp independently of the ECU.

Or I could just fit a separae flashing LED I guess!

Its very easy - just buy a flashing LED link

Yup. 555 timer on astable mode, simple.

loop from light wire to double pole double throw switch ( for map change) and from switch to electronic flasher relay ( the one we all bang on about for led indicators) wire relay as required.

12V flashing LED and a double pole switch for the map switching.
