OBD Bluetooth compatable with iPhone3?
v8kid - 17/5/12 at 11:22 AM

Has anyone used a OBD bluetooth with an iPhone 3 (notS)?

Infuriatingly my tintop does not have water temp gauges or ammeters and I also fancy the other data OBD gives but I've found my iPhone 3 to be bluetooth resistant to some stuff (it won't connect)

Cheers!

I use mine, but with a HTC DESIRE HD, and it works fine. I cant see there being any differences on how they work with different smartphones.

phone shop told me iphone's bluetooth ONLY* works with bluetooth headsets, and can't transfer pictures and stuff, so i think its unlikely to work, so for that reason, i left there with a HTC desire HD too...

*i suspect it would work if you jailbreak your phone, but i don't know.

iPhones have a very poor implementation of bluetooth. It can be used for headphones/car kits, but not data transfer.

My only works with the my bluetooth in my car, wont entertain anything else, I think Apple have to allow them to talk to the hands-free devices ...

You can get wifi OBD dongles that work with iPhones at a higher price than the bt ones and the elm chip in the ebay ones is still the fake type.

if you want to go that route then an Orange San Francisco II from the Orange Online shop and debrand it, see http://sanfranciscoandroid.co.uk/

However if you don't need it as phone then a hand held scanner that has live data will be better.

Thanks BT I looked at the wifi OBD but all the ones I could find were quite bulky and had remote wifi modules. I really just want something that is attached to the port all the time in my tintop so i can see water temp, amps etc.

I think I'll go for a secondhand android phone off ebay and hope it will work.

Cheers!
