Reversing light and fog light - how close to vertical
emwmarine - 14/8/12 at 10:01 AM

I have installed my fog light and reversing lights through the rear tub.

The old adage of measure twice and cut once may apply here. They will be a few degrees off being completely vertical and flat when the wheels are on and the car is lowered.

How picky is the |IVA test. Is there an element of 'that looks pretty vertical - ok' or will they measure the fog and reversing lights to be absolutely 90 degrees to the ground?

Reverse light doesn't need to be vertical, just shine to the rear.

It will depend on tester/test centre as to how picky they are, my fog was slightly off perfect vertical but the tester never mentioned it and the car passed.

Cant speak for IVA but I know for construction machinary the allowable deviation is +/- 3 degrees, unless the light has been tested to be aceptable over a range of angles.

If I remember correctly the IVA manual says 'mounted' squarely to the rear. Which could mean anything. I intend to manufacture a little angled flange for the light to sit to make it perpendicular to the rear.

It might be worth phoning the IVA advice number or even phoning your test centre.

I havnt done IVA/SVA, but would imagine that if they have to be at right angles to the ground, that must be with at least one person in the car

You could mount them on a top monted hinge, and that way no matter how the car goes up or down, they would ALWAYS be correct

mr SVA hitler would probably have a hissy fit,. as the hinge would not conform to some euro bollox certificate though

Mine was not measured in any way at IVA. He was interested in it working and being correctly marked on the lens. Mine was 'about vertical" but in no way perfect but passed without any question.

If it looks right, I am sure it will be near enough and as mentioned will be viewed as intended to pass
