USB to Serial for ECU
Alfa145 - 11/2/13 at 07:11 PM

Any recommendations for a USB to Serial adapter to talk to my Emerald, or will any old eBay item do?

I don't quite fancy coughing up £20 for one from Emerald when it should really be included in the kit, I can't remember the last time I saw a serial port on a laptop

I seem to remember maplins doing one (I think it's this) that worked with a lot of stuff, but for the price, you're probably better off just getting the emerald one.

After spending god knows how long trying to get USB to serial adaptors working, I gave up and used a laptop with a serial port instead!

They are majorly unreliable if you get the wrong one, and even UK supplier seem to be selling chinese carp. It probably sounds bad, but if Emerald recommend one I'd be tempted to use that.

There are two main chipsets used in these, Prolific 2303 and FTDI. The Megasquirts with a built in adapter use the FTDI set, and the guy who sells TunerStudio sells FTDI ones too. I've got two Prolific ones, one works, one doesn't. I've just bought an FTDI one from ebay which is due soon. They seem to be £10-£20 on there.

The cheapy ones can be a bloody nightmare to get to work and be reliable

Brought mine from emerald and never had an issue with it, worth it in my opinion rather than buying a cheap one that never worked

I have one that you can have for a few quid if you like?

It was new (came with my ETB Digidash Lite ) and I've never used it. I don't have the drivers sadly but I believe it's the Prolific one, at least that what they still supply with the DDLite!

Drivers are here and it appears to work fine on my laptop. Might be worth a go?

£6 posted?

Cheers

Agree with above, Most of them are so unreliable!

As above the FDTI ones are the best but more expensive (£10-15 quid), the prolific are less robust but much cheaper.

I have been looking at getting a PCMCIA to serial card from my laptop to connect to Megasquirt. Anyone uses one of these and was it any good? They seem quite cheap on ebay.

Tried about 6 different cheapy ebay ones [USB>Serial] (£2 each type) with megasquirts (MS1 and MS2) and so far been unable to get one that DIDN'T work with it!

Maybe the Emerald ECU uses different/stricter comms but for buttons I'd try an ebay special first.

I also found that many which work with XP or W7 will not work with Vista.

I have a PCMCIA to Serial card, free if you can collect or cover the postage...

You have a U2U.

Thanks for the replies and offers. I want to avoid the old case of will it wont it drivers issues so as there doesn't seem to be a guaranteed version I'll have to plumb for the Emerald rip off. (Which I think should have been included with the ECU)

Already ordered before I saw your post R1_Pete (grr must check forum before ordering) Thanks for the offer.

I tried a few cheap ones a few years ago and had all sorts of problems connecting to my Emerald ECU. I bought the one from Emerald and it worked perfectly every time.

The main issue with the Prolific based adapters is the large number of counterfeit PL2303 devices being made in China. You could say it's quite prolific in fact (Badoom tshh).

The counterfeit devices only seem to work reliably with older versions of the driver, so this may explain why one device works and one doesn't.
