zetec
Matt159888 - 6/10/13 at 10:16 PM

Well made alternator mounts and adjuster today. Made an idler with a sprinter belt pulley and ordered a belt. I am using a micra alternator and a fiat stilo belt. Having baffles put in my modified silvertop sump and changing cams next to the 130 cams. Which bike carbs would you recommend and which ignition mega jolt or nodiz. This motor is a 1.8 zetec for next summer then I will build a 2.0 and go for 200 bhp so carbs that would do both and ignition system for both would be great thanks Matt

whilst I applaud people making there own I recently did an engine swap for a fellow Tiger owner and we used this:
http://www.retro-ford.co.uk/shop/content/zetec-alternator-kit-%E2%80%93-black-top-z022

Have to say the quality was excellent and everything fitted out of the box and buy the time you factor in your time I don't think the price is at all out of the way either.

Trouble is, as every alternator has slightly different mounting points, you end up having to buy their alternator, and possibly their pulley too which bumps the price to £200!
Im also not so keen on how the waterpump is used for the pulley bracket on that kit. Its a pain to remove the pulley, and its very a very close fit.
Price wise, I paid £20 for a new alternator, about £5-10 for the metal, and will need to spend another £25 the pulley and belt needed. So a considerable saving for a few hours in the garage making it up.

The sprinter pulley, did that have a 17mm internal diameter? If so what sort of bolt spacer did you use to fit it?

No argument you can save money doing it yourself, just I factor the cost of my time in as well, sometimes spending a few quid allows me to move on to other jobs quicker.

Hi guys i have pics but cant understand how to put them on here?. Asks for http?. the sprinter pulley came off an old sprinter they have two ribbed idlers the bolt is a shouldered bolt with a spacer on the back of the NS pulley. The OS is same pulley but no spacer on the back to clamp the bearing, though washers would do. I havent made them to be pretty just function well so made heavy plate steel and tacked together on the engine then welded properly off the car. Micra alternator does the job but is really designed to mount the opposite side(ns of zetec) although will fit the os with the adjuster on the bottom. 1360mm belt i needed and the stilo one looks like the one 6pk1360 10 pound ebay. I totally agree if you go for the tiger or retro ford ones they are pretty and save a lot of hassle but by the time you have their alternator and postage your 200 pound into it. My alternator was 10 pound ebay and belt 10 pound and a bit of sweat and cursing and an afternoons work and its done. If you send me your email on pm i will send some pics to you to give you an idea how mine is fitted although there is plenty of bolt holes to play with, just watch the oil filter as close to alternator if fitting a large on like the micra. matt

Assuming the photos arent uploaded anywhere (ie they are just saved on you pc?)

Click this link:
http://locostbuilders.co.uk/photos.php

This will take you to your own locostbuilders photo achive.
You can either upload the files straight away by clicking on the browse button at the bottom right and selecting what photo you want to upload from your PC.
Or if you want it to be a bit more orderly, create a folder by typing a name in the 'new folder' box, then upload them the same way as above.

Once uploaded you will be able to click on the photo and above the photo will be two 'links' - a forum code link and a full URL link.
When posting, Ignore the add photo button just copy either the PG link - looks like this [pg] 90999 [/pg] but without the spaces to get a thumbnail which people can click on to see the full size photo. like so:
NovaLiftOff
NovaLiftOff

or copy the IMG link to display a full size picture on the page

[img ] http://locostbuilders.co.uk/upload/NovaAutosoloLiftoff.jpg [ /img] again without the spaces

Thanks!
I assume the oil filter squeezes in ok? look v close!

Matt159888 - 7/10/13 at 12:05 PM

Hi mate yes only just i have to say thats what i was warning of. There is a shorter filter you can fit to give a little more room not sure of the number but on of the forums on a zetec fitment shows it. Like i say the alternator really is for the otherside mounting but works ok and for 20 all in worth a try all lines up nice so see no reason it wouldnt be ok. What radiator is the radiator your using with your zetec? I have heard a polo radiator good fit and works ok for zetec?. Again cheap over the 200 ish tiger want for an alloy one?. Thanks Matt

loggyboy - 7/10/13 at 12:49 PM

Mine is a Golf/Vento 1.4/1.6 one, slightly wider than the usual Polo one, but fits nicely under the Striker nose.
Was cheap too

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF 1.4/1.6 1991-1998 / VENTO MANUAL RADIATOR NEW - 2 YEAR WARRANTY

Pretty sure this is the polo one most people use:

ZX9R carbs to cover your future power aspirations and a Nodiz ignition ECU. I can supply you the full package if required, drop me a message.

Matt159888 - 7/10/13 at 09:55 PM

Thanks for that will get measuring the room i have and see which rad to go for then. Long as polo and golf options i can buy knowing will work ok. Whats your take on zetec water rails any good? And Dan will have a chat when ready to buy and go from there. Do you do the manifold and carbs etc and setup or jetting?. And which model zx9 carbs are they do they have the throttle position sensor on them Thanks Matt

Pointless and a waste of money unless you absolutely dont have room to retain the standard thermostat housing. (Ie in a classic escort conversion)

Matt159888 - 8/10/13 at 11:02 AM

They are expensive they just seem to simplify the cooling system i will have an ask hose runs if i may when i do it. I am binning the heater box seems pointless that much air flow on a 7 with no roof i know needed for iva test but not now and will then just need to figure the hoses go to. there is several connections on the thermostat one must be bypass one heater and one to rad?. I assume water pump to bottom of rad, large thermostat to top blank on of the thermostat which would be heater and other to header tank? And any advise on hoses great its my next bit to suss out. Have sorted the sump and engine mounts not a problem really. The flywheel i will get a lightened one redrilled to take pinto cutch so keeps simply to type 9. radiator now sorted and have dan or bogg bros to sort the bike card set up. Nearly there!

Do a search here for zetec cooling and you will find plenty of info on setup ideas. Its fairly stright forward, there are 2 main connectors, 1 output and 1 input. The others are a breather, and then the 2 that lead to the heater/headertank, and its easy to block or recirculate the heater connectors.

As for IVA, just take the screen off as well and you wont need the heaters. Pop the screen back when its passed.

Matt159888 - 8/10/13 at 11:07 PM

Thanks for the help mate i am like a sponge at the minute lol!. I am getting a battle plan slowly, changing cams at weekend and designing the baffles for my modified sump. Fitting a silver top alloy sump and wash plate which has been cut down to my black top but no baffles in it and think be better with some as plan on some track days and aggressive driving!

Just a small point but do not compare the Retro Ford bracket kit with the Tiger one. The Tiger ones are made of chocolate by comparison and fail with monotonous regularity.

Matt159888 - 9/10/13 at 09:01 AM

Hi mate yes i have heard that the tiger ones are prone to failure. The retro ford ones were the ones i considered it was just down to money as by the time you buy their alternator belt etc it gets expensive. Mine isnt as pretty though painted will look ok and is made from truck chassis plate it will never fall off lol!. If the sun goes super nova and earth is vapourised the only thing the aliens in 400 billion years time will find of our world is my alternator bracket
