I'm creating my own wiring loom from scratch in a Sylva J15 using a Ford Duratec from an ST150.
I guessing that the relay for the starter motor should be a heavy duty item but I can find a part number or what rating to use.
I have three relays that were on the engine loom that came with the car and one has a couple of connectors that are much larger plus the wires coming from it are bigger. I suspect that was the starter relay but I cant find the part number anywhere.

Can anyone advise what is a good rating for a starter for this size engine?

The relay for the starter is called the solenoid and its part of the starter.

The solenoid draws around 10A so depending on what switch you are using you may or may not need one.

There would be a relay in the focus for two reasons. The first. switch gear and loom is designed for low currents and second the ecu uses the relay to immobilize the starter.

A standard 40A relay is fine.

Thanks, I knew there was a solenoid in the starter but wasn't sure if I needed a relay to power that.

Depends on how your switching it ?

Sierra ignition switch ? No

25A momentary push switch ? No

Savage start button ? No they have a relay mounted to them.

Ford Puma / Fiesta column ignition switch ? Yes I would use a relay.

That's interesting because I was going to start (no pun intended!) with the ignition switch and then change to a press button at a later stage. Might go straight for the button and save a relay!

I guess that depends on the switch this one says START SAVAGE REPLACMENT PUSH BUTTON SWITCH that would be fine.


Use a relay and can start it from the key or a button depending on the mood.
