Populating Wiring Loom Connector
scootz - 7/10/15 at 03:28 PM

Afternoon

I need to remove the wires from this connector, and then re-populate all 22 pins with 2m lengths of wiring.

Unfortunately, I don't have the specialist tools to do the job myself.

Can anyone help... or recommend someone who can?

Many thanks

From memory, you need to dismantle the body to release the crimps. You will then need the correct crimps and tool to replace them reliably. The tools are sometimes cheaper than expected and if it's worth doing, do it properly.

Never seen one of these large connectors up close.
Are they not like most connectors? They usually held in with push metal tabs, i find a thin (watch makers/glass repair kit) flat head screwdriver slides in and releases - with a bit of luck anyway!

Cheers guys... I had a look at the tools required and nearly choked on my coffee when I saw the prices!

Looking again, that looks to be a MIL spec connector so yes, the prices may be high!

Sometimes you get a plastic releasing tool when you buy spare contacts.

But you have probably seen the price of mil-spec contacts and housings.......

Cheers! I've found some plastic tools at reasonable prices!

That's the chaps!

I guess I don't need any extortionately-priced Soireau or Deutsch branded tools for a one-off job... that I'll probably bodge anyway!

Whats wrong with a "Correct" bodge with Scotchlocks??

Or if you donīt want to use the "Spam of the Devil" stuff, then use crimp on connectors and heat shrink...

My tip for removing pins.
If you have an old radio with the extending aerial, one of the sections of that is almost certainly the right size to slip over the pin, compress the little barb and then you can retract the pin from the back.
You do lose the radio aerial though.

I work with these every day, if you need anything let me know. I can crimp the pins on the wires for you if you need

let me know the part number on the red band round the bottom
