Small alternator for Zetec
Mix - 31/12/04 at 05:27 PM

Title says it all really. I'm looking for a small alternator, (physically and output wise) with a poly vee pulley suitable to fit to a Zetec.

Failing that can anyone tell me the type of pulley mount, (taper or parallel, keyed, not keyed) on their alternator. I can probably make a pulley, just want some guidance as to which alternator to liberate from the scrappy.

Cheers Mick

I used a daihatsu charade 1.3 16v one with a bracket like the one siert shows here:

http://home.tiscali.nl/~svos/alternator.html

cost £15 for alternator, had a local engineer make me a pulley the same diameter as the daihatsu one with the correct number of poly v grooves (which he copied from the fors escort water pump pulley). I think demon tweaks sell the pulleys from £26

They also sell new brise alternators from £125 upwards (50 amps to 200 amps)

I have also heard that you can use the original ford mondeo pulley with a piece of copper pipe as a shim to fit it to the smaller alternators. One word of warning though, I had a really hard time removing the daihatsu pulley from the alternator, ended up drilling and spilting the nut to get it off .

Thanks for the replies.

Off to the scrappy to look at Dihatsu Charades and Suzuki Swifts.

If you don't get one of those, then I used one from a Vauxhall corsa. Only thing I could get in my confined space.

Good thing was that it was siezed so he let me have it for a fiver. Took it appart and replace the siezed bearing for about 2 quid. Took a chance but it worked when I fitted it, result....
